Cake Smash Ideas :: North of Boston
And then the skies opened up, and She said “Let there be cake!” Betty Crocker 24:7.
One of our favorite things to shoot here in our photography studio north of Boston are the Cake Smash first birthday sessions! We’ve been doing it for 10 years now and love looking back on past sessions. Why don’t you take a trip down memory lane with me and visit our cake smash gallery.
Whether it be sweet and simple, or an elaborate theme, designing and creating these sets is a ton of fun. When it comes to cake smash sessions, the sky really is the limit. Because of this, and my current obsession with Pinterest, I usually have an embarrassing amount of ideas rattling off in my brain at any given moment. (For example, just check out my ever growing Pinterest Cake Smash Inspiration Board.)
Without further ado, drumroll please, The Official Crabapple Photography Cake Smash Bucket List of 2019.
For a limited time, if you choose a theme off of the cake smash bucket list that I have not already done, I’m including the custom cake (a $50 value).
Now, let’s talk smash. Check out some inspiration below for our bucket list themes.
* Mermaid / Under the Sea Theme
Every little girl wishes she were a Mermaid (No? Just me?!). Let’s make that dream a reality. Imagine your baby sitting on the set of an ocean floor, shades of teal and purple swimming together in a perfect blend under the sea.
Update: We loved getting to do a fun mermaid cake smash! It was definitely worth having on our bucket list. See more from Miss H’s under the sea celebration here: Wilmington Mermaid Cake Smash.
* Astronaut Cake Smash Idea
We were already lucky enough to get to cross a couple off of our list and, well, have you seen a cuter astronaut?! The balloons, the black puffs and the galaxy backdrop seriously make this shoot out of this world. Don’t even get me started on the adorable baby. See more from her out-of-this-world cake smash here!
* Donut Smash
A donut smash could go in a couple different directions. A stack of donuts instead of a cake? A cake that has donuts on top? Either way, please be ready to share with me. This theme is perfect for boys or girls because really, who doesn’t love donuts?
We were able to do a perfect “Donut Stop Smiling” donut smash for this adorable little man. I mean… come on! See more of Mr. A’s Donut Smash Andover 1 Year Photos here.
* Butterfly Cake Smash Inspiration
I love the look of paper butterflies, they are so simple and delicate. Just think of them soaring on a light backdrop, in shades of pastels.. surrounded by flying chunks of half eaten cake. I mean, life is all about balance.
For Miss A’s Butterfly Cake Smash it was all about pinks, purples, and beautiful pops of orange. You can see more from this whimsical cake smash here.
* Sports Themed Cake Smash
Whether you’re into baseball, or basketball is more your thing, you can’t go wrong with a sports theme for your north of Boston cake smash. A vintage baseball set is a dream of mine. I’ll even sing Take Me Out To The Ballgame ... and you can boo me off the field as if I were a Yankee.
Update: I’ve had the chance to do a few sports themed cake smash sessions. But here’s one that lived up to my expectations. You can see more from Mr. B’s Woburn Cake Smash here. For even more vintage baseball fun you can see another example in this blog post: Reading MA Cake Smash Photos.
* Pilot / Airplanes Theme
As far as cake smash ideas go, I’m not sure there is anything cuter than a baby in an aviator hat. Add some fluffy, white clouds in the background, a wooden airplane and boom, we are in flight.
* Alice in Wonderland Themed Smash
I love a good challenge. Let’s take Alice in Wonderland for example. Playing cards as a backdrop, a stopwatch, a cake that says “eat me,” a baby in a light blue dress with striped socks. It’s all too perfect.
* Rainbow / Unicorn Cake Smash Photos
For more of an artistic taste, there is the rainbow/unicorn cake smash. I’m thinking a variety of light colored balloons, our rainbow backdrop, and a seriously cute unicorn cake. Something about this set is so magical.
I can’t say for sure, but it’s probably the unicorns. You can see some examples of Rainbow and Unicorn cake smash sessions here: Miss B’s Andover MA Cake Smash and here: Miss A’s Cambridge MA Cake Smash.
* Fourth of July Cake Smash Pictures
‘Merica. Need I say more? The reds, the whites, the blues. This little guy did not disappoint when it came time to have his cake and eat it too! Check out more of his patriotic smash here.
* Rustic Woodland First Birthday Cake Smash
I am a sucker for anything rustic (thanks a lot Joanna Gaines) so picturing a wooded background with a little tent set up in the corner and a simple, white cake displayed on a tree trunk stand really excites me. I should really get a life.
Update: Okay, I love all of the themes. But this one might just be one of my favorites I’ve done yet. And this little man absolutely rocked his cake smash. See more of this Andover MA Woodland Cake Smash here!
* Smash and Splash!
And lastly, after a successful smash session, your baby will most likely be covered in cake, and I won’t lie, you may be too. Why not throw them in a tub?! A cute, baby sized tub with an even cuter baby in it makes for some amazing after smash photos.
