Boston Maternity Photography Sessions

Pregnancy is unlike any other season of life. It is powerful, emotional, and fleeting all at once. Maternity sessions are designed to help you pause and preserve this moment before your family grows.

As a Boston maternity photographer and mom of twins with over 17 years of experience, I understand how quickly these months pass and how meaningful it is to have portraits that truly reflect this chapter. Whether this is your first pregnancy or your fifth, every session is thoughtfully guided so you never have to wonder how to pose or what will photograph beautifully.

When to Schedule Your Maternity Session

For most expecting mothers, maternity portraits are ideally scheduled between 28–34 weeks, when your belly is beautifully defined but you’re still comfortable enough to enjoy the experience.

Because every pregnancy is different, timing is always flexible. If you’re unsure about the best window, I’m happy to help you plan based on your due date and preferences.

A Calm, Fully Guided Experience

Whether your session takes place in my Andover studio or at a carefully selected outdoor location, the experience is designed to feel relaxed, supportive, and fully guided from start to finish.

From the moment you arrive, the goal is simple: help you feel comfortable, confident, and beautifully photographed.

Your session includes:

  • Fully guided posing designed to flatter expecting mothers
  • Access to the curated maternity client closet
  • Thoughtfully styled setups tailored to your preferences
  • A calm, unhurried session pace
  • Professional hand editing in Crabapple’s signature timeless style

Many clients tell me the session feels far easier and more enjoyable than they expected.

Studio or Outdoor Maternity Photography

Maternity sessions can take place in my calm, private Andover studio just north of Boston or at carefully selected outdoor locations throughout the North Shore. The studio offers controlled lighting, a curated wardrobe collection, and a comfortable environment designed specifically for portrait sessions.

For families who prefer an outdoor look, on-location maternity sessions are thoughtfully planned at select locations. Together, we’ll choose a setting that complements your style while keeping the process simple, relaxed, and fully guided.

Maternity Photography FAQs

When is the best time to schedule a maternity session?

For most expecting mothers, the ideal window is between 32 and 36 weeks. At this stage, your belly is beautifully full and defined, and you’re typically still comfortable enough to move through different poses without difficulty.

Because every pregnancy is different, timing is always flexible. If you have a specific look in mind or your pregnancy has a different pace, I’m happy to help you plan the right window based on your due date.

Should I book my maternity session before or after the baby arrives?

Maternity sessions are designed to be done before your baby arrives, ideally in the third trimester. This is a season unlike any other, and it passes surprisingly quickly.

Many families choose to pair their maternity session with a newborn photography session to tell the full story of this chapter from pregnancy through those first fleeting days.

What do I wear for a maternity photo session?

The Andover studio has a curated maternity client closet available for all sessions, with a selection of flowing gowns and styled pieces that photograph beautifully and flatter a variety of body types and preferences.

You’re always welcome to bring something meaningful of your own as well. Full wardrobe guidance is provided before your session, so you’ll have everything you need to feel prepared and confident when you arrive.

Can my partner and other children be part of the maternity session?

Yes, and those images can be among the most meaningful from the entire session. Partners, toddlers, and older children are always welcome to join for part or all of the session. Guidance for family maternity portraits is provided throughout so everyone feels comfortable in front of the camera.

Which option is better, the studio or an outdoor session?

Both options are great. The Andover studio offers controlled lighting, privacy, and access to the full wardrobe collection. Outdoor maternity sessions are also offered at select locations throughout the North Shore, planned around the best available light and your preferred aesthetic.

If you’re unsure which setting feels right, I’m happy to walk you through both options based on your due date, style preferences, and the time of year.

How far in advance should I book?

Because maternity sessions need to be scheduled within a specific window before your due date, it’s best to reach out during the second trimester to ensure availability. Sessions book up quickly, especially during spring and fall, so earlier contact gives you the most flexibility.

If you’re further along and wondering whether there’s still time, feel free to reach out, last-minute availability does occasionally open up.
