Miss H’s Magical Mermaid Cake Smash :: Wilmington MA
If you’ve been around the blog for a while, you know I absolutely LOVE a fun and colorful cake smash. I love these cake smash sessions so much, my team and I created a cake smash theme bucket list back in 2019. And a mermaid themed cake smash was one of the first ideas added to the list. So when Miss H’s mom from Wilmington MA contacted me about a fun and magical mermaid cake smash, I was super excited.
As with any milestone session I started off with some solo portraits of Miss H. I had previously met Miss H and her family for family portraits a few months before her first birthday. I loved getting to photograph her with her mom and dad during their family session. Getting the chance to focus on just Miss H this time around was definitely a treat.

Incorporating A Theme Into Your 1 Year Photos
The truth is, a theme idea works for any milestone session. Whether it’s newborn, one year, or an older child. But cake smash sessions like this Wilmington one have become a very popular choice for themed and colorful sessions. And it makes perfect sense. A baby’s first birthday is all about celebrating. And what better way to celebrate than with color and fun. Plus with a cake as part of the portrait session it’s already super fun. Why not add a themed element?
In this cake smash, the mermaid theme started with a color palette. Shades of blue, purple, and hints of pink was a perfect choice for this theme. A colorful backdrop and some tissue paper flowers matched the colorful ombre cake. Then it was all about the nautical details. I used a boat prop I have in the studio and some shells to add the ocean feel to the set. And then, it was all about Miss H’s Mermaid At Heart top and mermaid tail leggings to finish off the theme. This is a great example of how parents don’t have to go crazy buying themed props and decorations for their little one’s cake smash session. For any small details you want to include in your session (or in your child’s first birthday party) I always suggest Etsy. But be careful, if you’re like me, once you start you can’t stop!
