Welcoming a new baby brings so many milestones during that first year, but one celebration many families may not be familiar with is the 100 day baby celebration. Over the years in our Andover studio, I have photographed a number of families celebrating this beautiful tradition through custom 100 day baby photos. These sessions often combine family history, cultural traditions, milestone photography, and simple portraits that preserve a stage that changes incredibly fast.
For families throughout Boston, the North Shore, and Southern New Hampshire, these sessions have become one of my favorite milestone sessions to photograph. If you are planning a 100 day celebration for your baby, here is a closer look at what this tradition means along with examples from several sessions over the years.
What Is A 100 Day Baby Celebration?
The 100 day celebration, often connected to Korean tradition known as Baek-il, celebrates a baby reaching their first one hundred days of life. It is a tradition in many different cultures as well, including Chinese, Japanese and Vietnamese. Historically, reaching 100 days was an incredibly important milestone. Infant mortality rates were significantly higher generations ago, so families celebrated when a baby successfully reached this early stage.
Today, many families continue the tradition as a way to honor cultural heritage while celebrating the earliest months of their child’s life. For many parents, it also becomes the perfect opportunity to schedule professional milestone portraits during a fun time of you child’s early days.
Why 100 Days Is A Wonderful Time For Baby Photos
At around three months old, babies are beginning to show much more personality than they did during newborn sessions.
This age often brings:
- emerging smiles
- stronger eye contact
- early tummy time skills
- beautiful expressions
- growing curiosity and awareness
From a photography perspective, this makes 100 day sessions incredibly rewarding. Babies still have that soft newborn appearance while beginning to interact much more with the world around them.
100 Day Portraits For Boys
One of the things I love most about these milestone sessions is how versatile they can be.
Some families prefer simple and timeless portraits that focus entirely on their baby without elaborate props or themes.
In these two sessions, we focused on clean styling and classic portraiture for beautiful 100 day baby photos for boys.

Baby Milestone Photography
Not every family chooses to incorporate traditional cultural elements.
Some parents simply want to document this milestone in a beautiful and timeless way.
This Lexington family wanted classic portraits that captured their baby right at this special stage.

Traditional 100 Day Celebration Photos
For many families, these sessions carry deep cultural meaning.
In Korean tradition, Baek-il celebrations remain an important family milestone and often include traditional clothing, symbolic foods, and family gathering traditions. The same can be found in China, Japan, Vietnam and in other cultures.
I love documenting these sessions because they preserve both family history and important cultural traditions.

Studio 100 Day Celebration Portraits
Some families prefer a simple studio setup that keeps the focus entirely on baby expressions and developmental milestones.
These sessions often feel timeless years later because they avoid trendy styling.

Why I Love Photographing Milestone Sessions
The first year passes incredibly quickly. While newborn sessions often capture those earliest sleepy days and first birthday sessions celebrate the end of babyhood, 100 day milestone photography fills a beautiful space in between.
It captures babies as they begin to wake up to the world around them. That stage deserves to be remembered too.
