Beach Family Portraits :: What to Wear

A Styling Guide for Beach Family Portraits :: Ideas and Inspiration for What to Wear

It is officially Memorial Day Weekend which means summer is upon us! I look forward to summer all year for the chance to slow it down, spend some time with my girls, and of course: get to the beach! Fall is hands down my busiest time of year, especially for family photos. Which is why it’s always nice to have a more laid back summer. Over the past few years beach family portraits have become more and more popular. And I’ve already had a few clients asking for help deciding how to style their beach family pictures and wondering what to wear. If you’re in the same boat, look no further!

Below I have some examples from past sessions I have photographed. And if you keep scrolling there are some clothing and outfit ideas, complete with links, from three of my go-to clothing sellers. There are lots of options with different style ideas and aesthetics. And remember, you don’t have to go with these exact pieces, everything is just serving as inspiration!

I love how light, airy, and classic these three cuties look.

Neutral Styling Options

So often we think that “neutral” has to mean plain white or beige. But the truth is that neutral is way more versatile than we think! Shades of white and beige are definitely a good starting point. But grays, and even many shades of blues definitely count as neutral. This is a great option if you’re looking to keep it light, breezy, and classic for your beach family portraits. It’s also a great starting point if you’re looking to have one family member act as a pop of color and keep everyone else neutral.

Classic Americana Styling Ideas

Getting into the summer always makes me think of classic Americana styling. Whether that means red, white and blue. Or star motifs. Or even the cutest little hot dog doggie embroidered shirt. Classic ginghams and plaids are definitely the start of the show when it comes to Americana prints. This is a perfect styling choice for fun summer family portraits.

Colorful Beach Styling Options

Youngest brother was a great pop of color!

Looking to add color to your beach family portraits? Look no further! I love all of the below options for pops of color. You can have the whole family in color, or have one kiddo acting as the pop of color. And there are so many different options when it comes to colorful outfits. Pastels, brights, primary colors, and everything in between. Florals and plaids are always a popular choice for girls. Plaid and stripes definitely reign supreme for boys. But I did manage to find some quirkier prints for both as well!

Ideas for The Whole Family

The company Hope and Henry is excellent when it comes to having matching clothing. And not just for the kiddos, but for mom and dad too! Below are just a few examples of the full family matching outfits. But they have so many other options on their website, too!
