For Mr. M’s first birthday photos, his parents chose a super fun and festive theme. They went with a The Very Hungry Caterpillar themed cake smash. Not only is this the perfect theme for a first birthday. But his parents also included it in Mr. M’s Haverhill Newborn Photos. This was such a fun cake smash, and that portion of the session was definitely the star of the show. But don’t worry, I got some nice solo portraits of Mr. M prior to the smash as well!

Including a Theme in Your Cake Smash Session
When it comes to including a theme in your little one’s first birthday cake smash session, there are many ways to go about it. Backgrounds and set design are obviously the number one way to get started. But props, accessories, and clothing can also help to sell the theme. And of course, since we’re talking cake smash sessions, the cake is a big part, too! For this The Very Hungry Caterpillar cake smash, mom and dad made the cake for Mr. M to smash and snack on. I love this extra special touch for his first birthday photos. The rest of the set was accomplished with multiple shades of green balloons across the wall in the shape of the caterpillar on the book cover. Some themed props in the shape of the iconic foods he eats added a special touch. And of course, the caterpillar himself! I love that this theme was a way to tie into Mr. M’s newborn photos.
