What Is Macro Photography in Newborn Portraits?

What Is a Macro Photography Lens and How do I use it in my Newborn Portrait Sessions?

As a newborn portrait photographer, I have a few different tricks up my sleeve when it comes to giving my clients the newborn pictures that they want. And one of those newborn tricks is my macro photography lens. So that begs the question, what is a macro lens and what is macro photography?

Technically speaking, macro photography is anything that is close up. This can be used on small objects, such as flowers, tiny stones or insects, anything you want to get up close and personal with. A macro lens is made to allow a photographer to get closer to whatever they are photographing and get a detailed image. Mine is a Canon L series 100 macro lens.

Using A Macro Lens in New Baby Portraits

A macro lens allows a photographer to get up close and personal and retain lots of detail.

So how does macro photography apply to my job as a newborn portrait photographer? It allows me to get detail shots of your little one. Those tiny eyelashes, the dimples on chubby newborn fingers, every detail of their pouty lips. Every one of those details is something you will want to remember with photographic clarity when your little one gets bigger. And thanks to my macro lens, I can give you that keepsake.

Not every parent thinks that the detail shots are something they’re going to want. But I can’t even count the number of times a parent has told me after the fact how much they love the close up of their baby’s fingers, toes, mouth or nose.

These newborn macro photography detail shots are some that I try to get during every session, whether it’s a full newborn session, or a newborn mini session. They’re even one of my top 6 must have photos to capture. To see the rest check out this post: My Top 6 Must Have Newborn Photos.
