Travel Cake Smash Ideas for Adventurous First Birthdays

Hot air balloon cake smash with clouds

Some babies are already born with a sense of adventure. Whether your family loves traveling, dreams about future vacations, enjoys classic cars, or simply wants a unique first birthday theme, a travel inspired cake smash offers endless creative possibilities. And there are so many options for adventurous cake smash sessions: air plane, motorcycle, car, hot air balloon, anything you can dream of.

One of my favorite things about designing custom cake smash sessions is taking a broad idea like “travel” and making every setup feel completely different. Some families choose vintage suitcases and maps. Others lean into the specific mode of transportation. Even though all of these sessions share an adventurous spirit, each one reflects a different personality.

If you’re looking for travel cake smash ideas near Boston, here are some of my favorite sessions from over the years.

Airplane Cake Smash Ideas

For families who love to travel or simply adore vintage aviation style, airplane cake smashes are always timeless. Some of these sessions feature classic propeller airplanes, while others use soft clouds, luggage, and vintage maps to create an old-world adventure feel.

Blue skies, fluffy clouds, and simple travel details photograph beautifully and keep the focus on your little explorer.

Hot Air Balloon Cake Smash Themes

Hot air balloons add a whimsical, storybook feeling to a cake smash. These sets are perfect for parents who want something playful without relying on licensed characters.

Soft clouds, floating balloons, and dreamy colors create an adventurous backdrop that feels equally appropriate for boys or girls. I especially love these themes because they photograph beautifully from every angle.

Race Car First Birthday Sessions

Not every travel adventure happens in the sky.

Race car inspired cake smashes are energetic, colorful, and perfect for little ones who already love anything with wheels. Whether the setup feels vintage or modern, adding road signs, checkered flags, and toy cars creates a playful first birthday celebration.

This theme is always a favorite for active little boys, although it can easily be customized for girls too. And if you’re more into vintage cars than race cars, that can be a fantastic option too!

Motorcycle Cake Smash

Motorcycle themes have become increasingly popular over the past few years, especially for families who ride together. Whether that means classic Harley imagery or a more modern Suzuki take like the one below.

It’s a perfect choice for families who want something personal rather than following traditional first birthday themes.

Around the World Inspiration

Some of my favorite travel sessions don’t focus on a specific vehicle at all. Instead, they celebrate the excitement of exploring the world.

Vintage luggage, globes, passports, maps, and travel tags create a classic adventure theme that never goes out of style.

One of these sessions was inspired by The Little Prince, using beautiful luggage and travel details that fit perfectly into an adventure-themed celebration while still giving a subtle nod to the beloved story.

It’s a wonderful reminder that cake smash themes don’t have to fit neatly into one category. Sometimes the most memorable designs combine several ideas into something completely unique.

My Cake Smash Theme Bucket List

After photographing hundreds of custom cake smash sessions over the years, there are still a few themes I’d love to create.

At the top of my list is a vintage train cake smash.

I’m picturing an old-fashioned steam locomotive, stacked luggage, antique trunks, vintage travel posters, railroad signs, and classic wooden toys. It would have all the charm of an early American railway adventure while still feeling timeless enough to become beautiful first birthday portraits.

If you’ve been dreaming about a train themed cake smash, I would absolutely love to help bring that idea to life.

Every Adventure Starts Somewhere

One of my favorite parts of planning cake smash sessions is collaborating with families to create something that feels personal. Sometimes parents arrive with a fully developed vision. Other times they simply tell me their child loves airplanes or that their family enjoys traveling, and together we build a custom set from there.

No matter where the inspiration comes from, the goal is always the same: creating joyful portraits that celebrate an incredible first year. You can see more past ideas in this gallery, on Instagram, or on Pinterest.

If you’re planning a travel cake smash near Boston, I’d love to help design an adventure that’s uniquely yours.
