Mr. L’s Red Year of the Tiger First Birthday Celebration and Cake Smash Photos :: Newton MA Photographer
This first birthday celebration was full of tradition, rituals, and, of course, cake! Mr. L’s family had a few different Chinese customs and traditions that they wanted to include in his first birthday celebration photos. Since this session took place close to the Chinese New Year, they wanted to incorporate traditional new year clothing. And also include nods to the Year of the Tiger. We started off with family and solo portraits. I am so obsessed with the little suit Mr. L wore for his solo portraits. The vest and bowtie combination is beyond adorable!
Including Cultural Ties in Your Cake Smash and Baby Photos
Then it was time for the traditional Chinese ceremony where parents lay out objects that each represent a potential profession. Baby chooses an object and that gives a glimpse into what profession could be theirs in the future! This is such a fun tradition and one that I have photographed a few times over the years. I love getting to watch and learn about other cultures in this way! This is such a fun thing for first birthday celebration photos.
For the cake smash, we used a simple white backdrop with red Chinese New Year accessories hanging on the wall. Paper lanterns in gold, white and black sat on the floor behind Mr. L. My wonderful baker took care of the cake (something that is always an option for parents) and I love how the red, white, and yellow turned out. All in all this was a gorgeous cake smash that was exactly what mom had envisioned!
