Mama-to-be A’s Outdoor Winter Maternity Photos in South Boston

I have always loved outdoor sessions. Whether it’s a family portrait session, maternity photos, or even the occasional child mini-session. But in the past I have mainly photographed outdoors in the spring, summer, and fall. And in New England there are things to love about all three of those seasons. Over the last few years however, I have truly learned to appreciate outdoor photo sessions in the winter as well. It began mostly out of necessity. Due to Covid-19, there was more of a sense of safety in being outdoors. But after my first winter of outdoor sessions, I truly do have a love for them. Of course, there is more planning involved with an outdoor maternity photo session in the winter like this one in South Boston. Coats, boots, and additional cold-weather accessories are necessary.

Styling Your Maternity Session

One of the most common things clients ask me about before just about any session is about styling. My number one piece of advice when it comes to styling any session is be comfortable. This is especially necessary when it comes to maternity sessions. If you (or your kiddos when they’re involved) are uncomfortable, you can tell. But if you’re comfortable and happy, that will absolutely show in your photos. And as someone who has been pregnant before, I know how difficult it can be to be comfortable at any point during pregnancy. So you might as well wear something that will make you feel comfortable AND beautiful.
When we are in my studio I have a large assortment of maternity gowns. I am always more than happy to bring a few along with me when meeting up for outdoor sessions as well. Before any session I send a styling questionnaire that can help with planning color schemes and styles. This way I can be prepared. Most of the gowns are very thin and definitely not warm. That being said I have brought them along for colder weather outdoor shoots before–if you’re willing to risk being a little chilly I am more than happy to provide them!

Outdoor Portrait Color Schemes
When it comes to outdoor photographs, choosing a color scheme can seem daunting. Especially during the warmer months when there is an abundance of color to compete with. One of the great things about being outdoors in the winter is that the backdrop of all of these South Boston maternity photos is all white. This means that mama A’s gorgeous purple coat absolutely pops. I also really love the pops of yellow and red thanks to her gloves and scarf. This is a great example of how to accessorize for the weather in a way that is perfect for portraits!
