The H Family’s Photos :: Acton Family Photographer

Acton sister photos

The sweet H family came to my studio from nearby Acton MA for their family photos. I had previously photographed these two little ladies a few times each–for each of their newborn, sitter, and one year photo sessions. This was a fun family photo session and was also celebrating little sister’s second birthday. At the time they were four and two which are such fun ages. They can be a challenge, it’s true. But it’s a challenge that is definitely worth it. And these girls absolutely rocked this photoshoot. I especially love the photos of the two girls hugging and dancing together. And seriously, there is no way you can look at little sis, Miss R, smiling and laughing and not smile.

Styling Your Child’s Portraits

I absolutely love the styling in this Acton family photo session. This is a perfect example of how to mix and match prints. Both girls are in prints that are the exact same color scheme. And they’re even in the same family of prints. But Miss M’s larger, buffalo plaid style dress, and Miss R’s more traditional plaid dress, are just different enough that it creates a beautiful contrast in photos. And the fact that they’re black and white adds a classic, timelessness to the outfit choices.

Choosing clothing for family photos, especially when there are toddlers involved, can seem like a daunting task. But here are my top three pieces of advice:

1) Comfort is key. Especially with toddlers, if they’re uncomfortable everyone will know it.

2) When in doubt, keep it classic for your family photos. It can be tempting to choose something very trendy. And there is definitely nothing wrong with being on trend. But it can sometimes be easily dated to a certain year or time period, especially if there are characters or graphics on the clothes. If you want to keep your portraits timeless, stick to classic color schemes and prints.

3) Don’t be afraid to add a pop of color to your Acton area family photos. In this case, I love that mom and dad are both wearing green tops. This adds just a touch of color in the family photos and it’s the perfect contrast to the black and white. I’ve also seen parents choose to use an accessory as a pop of color, or just have one child in a bright color.

At the end of the day, if you love the outfits, they are the perfect choice!
