Mr. D’s Newborn Portraits near North Reading MA
There is something extra special about getting to take newborn photos for a family when I’ve previously photographed their older children. In this case, Mr. D and his family came to my studio from nearby North Reading for his newborn portraits. I had also photographed his big brother, Mr. L for his own newborn pictures! You can check out big brother’s session here: North Reading Newborn Photos. I loved getting to see this family again for baby number two. Mom and I actually grew up in the same town, so it’s always fun to catch up with a fellow Chelmsford Lion. And Dad is from Australia–where I studied abroad in college!

Styling and Props for Newborn Pictures
Before this session, just like all of my sessions, I sent mom and dad a questionnaire. This covers everything from who will be present for the session, to must have photos. It also talks a lot about styling ideas. Whether that means specific color choices, styling aesthetics, or what props the parents want. For these North Reading newborn portraits, mom mentioned “soft blankets, neutral colors, knit wear type stuff. Cozy. Clean. Swaddles of soft things.” She also specifically mentioned the faux fur rugs and less obvious props. As she put it, “more focus on the baby.” Knowing this, I was able to choose swaddles, blankets, and faux fur rugs that perfectly matched her color scheme and aesthetic.
I also ask parents about colors and styling of nurseries. This isn’t always a necessity when it comes to styling for newborn portraits. However I do try to make sure at least some of the photos work with the color scheme or theme of the nursery. In this case, that meant light blue and white. I can entirely picture the photo of Mr. D with the knit koala bear hat and diaper cover in a light blue and white nursery! Speaking of which, the kangaroo and koala hats are a nod to dad’s home in Australia. Too adorable! I love when parents bring along special props like this for their newborn portraits. I’m not sure where mom and dad got these ones, but if you’re looking for something similar I would suggest starting at Etsy.
What Mom is Saying
“We have hired Kate twice for newborn photos for our two sons and are so thrilled with the results. She manages every detail for you–from the “what to expect” email before arrival, to the actual shoot, to the ordering of prints and organizing of albums afterwards. She is a baby whisperer and a photography ninja! Both times, she managed our newborns with such ease and patience. She really knows how to put both both baby and parents at ease. She has a comfortable and professional studio, tons of props, outfits, and does all the creative work when it comes to styling the poses. And then there’s the actual photos! The lighting, focus, zoom, and angles of the photos are truly wonderful. We will cherish them forever. The hardest part is choosing which ones to frame as we have so many amazing options. We highly recommend working with her–you will not be disappointed.” -Mom R
