The L Family’s Outdoor Winter Family Portraits :: Boston MA
Ahhh… winter in New England. I met up with this family from Boston MA for some outdoor winter family portraits. Outdoor portraits in winter are something that I have started taking more of in the past few years. But to be honest, it wasn’t until Covid hit that I started to take full advantage of the winter wonderland that we live in. Since social distancing is such an important part of staying safe and healthy right now, outdoor portrait sessions are a great idea. And this family portrait session is proof that outdoor sessions don’t have to be limited to beach days or fall foliage.
The most common question I get from parents before any session is “what should we wear?” This can be tricky for any family photo session. Coordinating color schemes and making sure no one is clashing is one thing. But being outdoors can add an additional element of styling. Keep reading to hear more tips and tricks for styling your outdoor family portraits near Boston. But remember, the most important thing to remember for family photos is making sure everyone is comfortable and happy! If they’re cold, they’ll be miserable. And if that’s the case, you’ll see it in the pictures.

Styling Your Winter Family Photos
When outside, there isn’t always just a neutral backdrop like in my studio. But when it comes to taking outdoor family portraits in winter, the real battle is with the elements. It can get cold out there! Which is why above all, dressing for the weather is crucial. Especially for little ones. For this winter outdoor family portrait session near Boston, Mr. M stayed nice and toasty in his puffy coat for a majority of the session. We were able to slip the coat off for a few shots of him in his cute and cozy sweater. This is always an option. Keep the coat on for most of the portraits, and slip it off for a few quick shots here and there.
Shoes are also super important with outdoor family portrait sessions. If we’re able to keep on a path the whole time, that’s great. But if there’s snow on the ground, then your little one is likely to run through snow at least once. And no one likes cold, wet feet!
