Family Portraits by Crabapple Photography
I love family photography! I am a firm believer in family portraits being a perfect way to celebrate your wonderful and unique family. These portraits become more precious with time as the babies grow to children and teenagers and before you know it, they’re off to college!
My doors have been open since 2009 and I have lots of experience with all ages and stages. This is extremely important when photographing (juggling!) family portraiture. My style is clean and whimsical and focused on capturing those fleeting moments and your loving family connection.
Where I Photograph Family Portraits
My cozy studio is conveniently located just north of Boston in Andover, MA. My families are often from southern, northern and western Massachusetts. As well as southern New Hampshire. As an alternative to the studio, I also photograph on location. Meaning at a nearby park, beach or in some cases, a client’s home. Where we photograph your family is dependent on your personal style choice, comfort, and often what season we’re in.
What is The Best Season for Family Photos?
There is truly no bad time to update your family portraits. It is not the photos you do get taken that you will regret, it is the ones that you were too busy to find time for. So I encourage any season for family portraits! But I will include some information on different seasons below.
The fall is a very popular time for outdoor family photos with the beautiful changing New England landscape as our backdrop. Weather-wise things are always up in the air, but typically it’s neither too hot like the summer months, or too cold like the winter months. Click here to see some fall family portrait “what to wear” inspiration. Keep in mind this is a very busy time for family photographers and my studio. Bookings may be limited.
If it happens to be winter, I’m elated to photograph your family outdoors. It is the North East and cold and snowy in the winter, so we we just have to be ready and styled for it. Here is a pinterest board I’ve put together that shows some ideas of how beautiful winter family sessions can be. For styling, think warm clothes including hats, gloves and jackets.
The summer often conjures up thoughts of the beach. And I love photographing families at the beach! However my favorite time to do this is the outskirts of the busy beach season. Thank late May and into June, late August and into September. It is less crowded on the beach for maximum comfort for every family member and also not too hot or sweaty! I have put together a “what to wear for your summer photos” blog post with some styling inspiration.
The spring is another great time for family pictures. In the studio is always an option of course, but if you’d like to head outdoors, we may be able to capture your photos during the very fleeting one to two weeks trees have their beautiful pink and white blooms shining. This time can never be guaranteed, of course. Making it all the more special.
Pets
If you’re wondering if you can include your pet in your family photos, the answer is yes. Click to read a blog post about including pets in your family portrait session. Pets are very much a part of the family and I’m happy to include them.

What to Do With Your Family Photos
After your session I am here to help as much or as little as you need in deciding how you will enjoy your new art. I can answer any and all questions about the differences between framed artwork and canvases, or the customization of your fine art album. Digital files are a very popular option for lots of reason and are available as well.
