Boston Cake Smash Photography :: Mr. K’s Duck Themed Cake Smash

Mr. K and his family celebrated his first birthday in the studio with a one year photo shoot and a cake smash session. Cake smash sessions are always a ton of fun. But before the messy part, I make sure I take the time to get some portraits of the birthday boy and his parents. One year is such a fun age. Babies at age one interact with you, they have real personalities that are able to shine through. It’s a transitional age between baby and toddler. Mr. K was a ton of fun during his session. This kid could seriously be a model with those big brown eyes! And with that bow tie on, I mean, come on. It doesn’t get much cuter than that!

Choosing A Theme For A Cake Smash Session

Cake smash sessions are meant to be a celebration. Your baby is one, which is definitely a reason to celebrate. Since these sessions are centered around fun and messy, it’s the perfect time to get creative. Over my years of doing cake smash sessions, I have seen all sorts of themes. Some are as simple as choosing a specific color scheme, some get more specific.

For this cake smash, it was all about rubber duckies! I loved this idea because not only is it a specific theme, but it also manages to be simple. Rubber duckies are iconic and instantly recognizable. And the bright yellow ducks are a perfect pop of color. But other than that, the session still manages to be timeless. Mr. K’s bow tie and diaper cover match the colors of the cake, while the bunting behind him is in more muted, neutral colors. Add in some bubbles and everyone is happy! Now excuse me while I sing the “Rubber Duckie” song for the rest of the day. “Rubber Duckie, you’re the one….”
