Why a Tree Farm Is the Perfect Location for Fall Family Photos

Tree farms are one of my favorite locations for seasonal family photos. The rows of evergreen trees create a beautiful natural backdrop, but there is also plenty of room for families to move, interact, and create a gallery with a lot of variety. For families in Greater Boston, the North Shore, and Southern New Hampshire, a tree farm can be especially beautiful for late fall and holiday photos. You don’t need peak foliage for the location to look seasonal. The evergreens provide color and texture even after most of the leaves have fallen, and the setting feels festive without requiring a heavily themed backdrop.

I’ve photographed families, siblings, young children, and even maternity sessions at tree farms over the years. Here are some of my favorite tree farm family photo sessions and ideas to help you decide if this type of location is right for your family.

Why Are Tree Farms So Good for Family Photos?

One of the best things about a tree farm is the variety it gives us within a single location. We can photograph your family walking between the trees, standing together for a more traditional portrait, or interacting naturally while the children explore their surroundings.

The trees also create layers and depth in the images. We can photograph with the rows of trees behind you, move closer for portraits with more greenery filling the background, or use the open areas of the farm for a completely different look. And unlike a location that depends on colorful fall foliage, a tree farm can still look beautiful later in the season. The evergreen trees give the photos a distinctly seasonal feel even when most other fall color has disappeared.

What Do Tree Farm Family Photos Look Like?

There isn’t one particular “tree farm look.” Some families prefer classic portraits, while others want their session to feel more playful and candid. With young children especially, having a location where they can move around gives us opportunities for both posed portraits and genuine interactions.

I’ve photographed families with toddlers, older children, siblings, and growing families at tree farms, and each session has looked a little different.

One example is this North Andover family session, which shows how beautiful a tree farm can be for a classic family gallery. The setting gives us plenty of natural greenery while keeping the focus on the family.

Can You Get a Variety of Family Photos at a Tree Farm?

Absolutely. A tree farm gives us plenty of opportunities to create a gallery that includes more than just everyone standing together. Depending on your family and the ages of your children, we might photograph the whole family together, siblings interacting, individual portraits of the children, parents with their children, and smaller combinations of family members.

For younger children, some of my favorite images often happen while they are moving, exploring, or interacting with their parents and siblings. For older children, we can incorporate more traditional portraits as well as more relaxed images.

What About Tree Farm Photos with Toddlers and Young Children?

Tree farms can be especially fun for families with young children because the environment gives them something to look at and explore. Instead of expecting children to stand still for the entire session, we can incorporate movement and interaction into the photographs.

My goal is always to create a combination of portraits that look beautiful while still feeling like your family. Some of the best images may happen while your children are walking between the trees, holding hands, laughing together, or simply looking around. This is also why I like having a variety of approaches available during a session. If a child isn’t interested in sitting still for a traditional portrait, we can change things up rather than forcing the moment.

What Should You Wear for Tree Farm Family Photos?

Your clothing can have a big impact on how the finished images look, particularly when you’re surrounded by evergreen trees and other natural colors.

Coordinating rather than perfectly matching usually works best. Layers, textures, and colors that complement the natural surroundings can add visual interest without competing with the location.

I’ve put together a separate styling guide specifically for families planning tree farm mini sessions, with more examples of outfits and styling ideas which you can see here.

Are Tree Farm Photos Only for Families?

Not at all. While family sessions are one of the most popular ways to use a tree farm, the setting can also work beautifully for siblings, individual children, and maternity portraits.

I’ve photographed holiday sibling portraits and solo child portraits at tree farms, and the setting gives those images the same seasonal feeling while allowing the focus to remain on the individual children.

The trees can also make a beautiful backdrop for maternity photos. A tree farm session doesn’t have to look like a traditional holiday session. With the right styling and timing, it can feel natural and seasonal while still focusing on the connection between an expecting mom and her family.

What Are Tree Farm Mini Sessions Like?

Tree farm mini sessions are a popular option for families who want updated holiday photos without committing to a full family session.

Because mini sessions are shorter, we focus on making the most of the time we have. That usually means fewer outfit changes and a more streamlined approach, but there is still plenty of opportunity for family portraits, sibling photos, and individual images of the children.

Over the years, I’ve photographed a variety of tree farm mini sessions throughout Massachusetts and north of Boston. These galleries show some of the different ways families can approach a tree farm session.

These galleries are also a good reminder that there isn’t one right way to photograph a family at a tree farm. The same type of location can look completely different depending on the family, the children’s ages, the styling, and the light.

What Is the Best Time for Tree Farm Family Photos?

The best timing depends somewhat on the look you’re hoping to create. Tree farms can be beautiful in late fall and into the holiday season, and the evergreen trees mean the location continues to have plenty of visual interest even after peak fall foliage.

Light is another consideration. Late afternoon can provide beautiful soft light, while an earlier session can be helpful for families with younger children or schedules that don’t work well around sunset.

For holiday mini sessions, the availability of the particular tree farm also plays a role, so dates and timing can vary from year to year.

Looking for Tree Farm Family Photo Inspiration?

I’ve photographed tree farm sessions with families of different ages and sizes, from families with toddlers and young children to sibling portraits and maternity sessions.

If you’re trying to picture what your own session could look like, these galleries are a good place to start. You can see how different families interact with the same type of environment and how we can create a mix of classic portraits, candid moments, and individual photos during one session.

This is one of the best posts to explore if you’re looking for a broader look at what tree farm family photography can look like. Because it includes multiple sessions, it gives you a chance to see different families, ages, and approaches to the location.
