When it comes to celebrating a birthday for toddlers and children, it’s all about having fun. A 3 year old birthday photo session doesn’t need to be complicated to create beautiful, memorable portraits. For Miss S’s third birthday, we kept things bright, playful, and simple with sunshine, giant sunflowers, a studio favorite oversized wooden number 3, and a cheerful yellow dress.
Miss S is part of my Birthday Club, which is available for children who have completed a full first year package with Crabapple Photography. I’ve photographed all of her siblings over the years and had the pleasure of photographing Miss S throughout her first year, too, so it was especially fun to see her personality shine at three.
What happens during a 3 year old toddler birthday photo session?
Birthday Club sessions are mini sessions, which means they are intentionally shorter than a full portrait session. There is usually less time for multiple outfit changes, elaborate props, or a long series of setups, but that doesn’t mean the photos are any less fun.
In fact, a shorter session can be a great fit for a 3 year old. Toddlers don’t always want to spend a long time sitting, smiling, and posing for the camera. Keeping things moving can give us more opportunities to capture genuine expressions, movement, and personality before they lose interest.
For Miss S, we used a few simple elements that made the whole session feel like a celebration: her yellow dress and matching bow, giant sunflowers, a white wooden chair, a flower covered rattan bench, and my favorite giant wooden 3. We also made time for some dancing and plenty of big smiles.

Can a 3 year old birthday session still capture a variety of photos?
Absolutely. The key to creating variety in toddler birthday photos is knowing when to keep things simple and when to let a child move.
Some children love sitting and smiling for the camera, while others would much rather dance, stand, walk, or explore. Parents know their children best, and that insight is especially helpful during a shorter toddler session. Rather than expecting every three year old to behave the same way, I work with their personality and attention span.
That flexibility is what allowed Miss S’s session to include everything from classic birthday portraits with her giant number 3 to candid feeling moments of her dancing and laughing. The result is a gallery that feels like her at three, not just a collection of posed birthday pictures.

A simple birthday session can be full of personality
A 3 year old birthday photo session doesn’t need lots of props or multiple outfits to create a beautiful gallery. A favorite color, a meaningful birthday detail, and enough room for a child to be themselves can be more than enough.
Miss S’s sunny yellow and sunflower session was the perfect example. It was cheerful, colorful, and age appropriate while still giving us the timeless portraits her family will enjoy for years to come.
