I first photographed this North Andover family back in 2020, when Miss V was just one year old. Five years, several seasonal mini sessions, and a whole lot of growing later, I was photographing them again, this time at the tree farm for their 2025 family photos. It is always a little surreal to look back at those early photographs and see just how much can change in a few years. Miss V is no longer the tiny one year old I first met, and her big brother Mr. J has grown right alongside her. I’m forever thankful for the chance to be a family photographer in the North Andover area.

That is one of my favorite parts of photographing families over the years. I get to see the little personalities that were just beginning to emerge become more and more themselves. For this session, we met at the tree farm in the fall, one of my favorite settings for family photos. The deep green evergreens, golden light, and changing autumn landscape created a beautiful backdrop for a session that included plenty of classic portraits, but also a lot of genuine connection and playfulness.

A Tree Farm Is a Beautiful Setting for Fall Family Photos

There is something especially fun about photographing a family at a tree farm in the fall. The evergreen trees bring a rich, deep green to the photographs, while the golden light and autumn foliage add warmth in the background. It feels seasonal and festive without requiring a heavily themed setup.

This family’s wardrobe worked beautifully with the setting, too. Mom and Dad chose classic cream, beige, and denim, while Mr. J wore an olive green sweater that complemented the trees. Miss V’s red dress added a festive pop of color without overpowering the rest of the family’s neutral palette.

I love this kind of combination for tree farm family photos. The colors coordinate without looking overly matched, and the red and green feel seasonal without making the photographs look like everyone dressed specifically for a Christmas card.

Family Photos Don’t Have to Stop When Your Kids Get Older

One of the things I especially love about this session is that the kids were about 12 and 6. Professional photography is often associated with babies and toddlers because those early years change so quickly. But there is just as much worth documenting as children get older.

At six, Miss V still has plenty of that little kid playfulness. At twelve, Mr. J is at an entirely different stage, with his own personality and sense of humor becoming more apparent.

And their relationship is changing, too. We photographed individual portraits of each child, a sweet black and white portrait of the siblings together, and one of my favorite playful moments from the session: Mr. J giving his little sister a piggyback ride.

Those are the photographs that remind me why continuing the tradition of family photos matters. Your children don’t stop being worth photographing just because they are no longer babies. In fact, sometimes it is the photographs from these inbetween years that become especially meaningful later.

Making Time for Every Relationship

When I photograph a family, I want the gallery to tell the story of the whole family, but I also want to make space for the individual relationships within it. For this session, we photographed Mom with each child and Dad with each child, along with the sibling portraits and individual photos.

I love these combinations because they capture something different from the full family portrait. A six year old daughter standing beside her dad today will look very different in a few years. A twelve year old son leaning into his mom will eventually become a teenager, then a young adult. The relationship stays, but the way they interact changes.

Those smaller portraits give families a way to remember those relationships exactly as they were during this particular season.

A Mix of Classic Portraits and Real Connection

Of course, we made sure to capture the classic family portraits, too. There are photographs of everyone together, including a sweet family cuddle and a portrait of the four of them walking hand in hand through the trees. But there was also plenty of room for the kids to interact naturally and for the family to simply enjoy being together.

That balance is important to me. I don’t want every image from a family session to feel perfectly posed. I want there to be photographs that feel polished and timeless alongside the ones that show personality and connection.

Sometimes that means everyone looking at the camera. Sometimes it means walking together and looking at one another. And sometimes it means an older brother giving his little sister a piggyback ride. All of those moments belong in the story.

What to Wear for Tree Farm Family Photos

This family’s wardrobe is also a great example of how to dress for fall family photos at a tree farm. Mom and Dad stayed with classic cream, beige, and denim. Mr. J’s olive green sweater added another natural, earthy tone that worked beautifully with the evergreen trees. Miss V’s red dress brought in just enough color to make the photographs feel festive.

The overall look is coordinated without being overly matched. When choosing outfits for a tree farm session, I love a combination of neutrals, earthy colors, and one or two richer seasonal tones. You don’t need everyone wearing the same colors. Instead, think about choosing pieces that complement one another while allowing each person to still look like themselves.
