There are only a few weeks every year when New England looks like this. The trees shift from green to gold, orange, red, and deep rust. The afternoon light gets softer. The air turns crisp. And suddenly, the familiar parks and walking paths around Boston feel completely different. Family photos during peak New England fall foliage season are hands down some of the most sought after.
That short window is one of my favorite times of year to photograph families. For this fall family photography roundup, I’m sharing a few of my favorite images from October 2025, with sessions photographed in Medford, MA and at Ipswich River Park in North Reading, MA. The families were different, the locations had their own personalities, and the children were all at different ages and stages, but the beautiful New England fall foliage gave every session something in common.
These are the kinds of fall foliage family photos that perfectly illustrate why so many Boston and North Shore families look forward to this season every year.
There Is Nothing Quite Like Fall in New England
Fall family photos can technically happen any time the leaves are beginning to change, but there is something special about catching the season when the color is really showing off. The deep greens begin giving way to warm golds. Orange leaves fill the background. Some trees turn almost completely red while others keep a little green, creating layers of color throughout the photographs.
And because the season is so short, it never feels quite the same from one year to the next. That is part of what makes these New England fall family photos so meaningful. You aren’t just documenting your children at a particular age. You are also documenting a particular autumn, in a particular place, when everyone was a little bit smaller and life looked a little different.
Fall Foliage Family Photos at Ipswich River Park
Ipswich River Park in North Reading is one of those locations that works beautifully for fall family photography because there is plenty of natural variety. There are wooded areas, open spaces, paths, and plenty of trees to give us different backdrops without making the session feel like we’re simply moving from one pile of leaves to another.
For this October session, the foliage created a beautiful mix of warm browns, oranges, greens, and golden light.
I also love that a location like Ipswich River Park gives children room to move. We can start with a classic family portrait, then change things up with sibling photos, individual portraits, and images of everyone walking or interacting together. The result is a gallery that feels like a family portrait session rather than a collection of everyone standing in front of the same tree.
Fall Family Photos in Medford, MA
The Medford sessions had a different feel, even though it was photographed during the same beautiful October season. Here, the families were photographed among mature trees, walking paths, open areas, and some particularly beautiful pockets of autumn color.
That variety is one of the reasons I love photographing fall family photos near Boston. You don’t necessarily need an elaborate or heavily styled location. Sometimes a simple park with beautiful trees and good light is all you need.
The fall foliage does quite a lot of the work.
The Colors Are Part of the Story
When I’m photographing families during the fall, I’m always paying attention to the foliage. Not just whether the leaves are pretty, but how the colors can work within the photographs.
A golden tree can create a beautiful background for a close portrait. A path lined with autumn trees can give us a wider photograph that really shows the season. A mix of green, gold, and orange can create a softer background when we want the focus to remain on the family.
The foliage becomes part of the composition without taking over the photograph. That is one reason I tend to love natural outdoor locations for fall. There is enough visual interest already there. We don’t need to add much.
Why Fall Foliage Photos Are Worth Planning Ahead For
If you’re hoping for those quintessential New England fall colors, waiting until October arrives to think about family photos is usually too late. The exact timing of peak foliage changes from year to year, and the window can be surprisingly short. Some years the color arrives early. Other years, warm weather keeps the leaves green longer than expected.
Then, once the colors are beautiful, everyone wants the same handful of weekends. This is why I recommend families start thinking about fall family photos on the North Shore well before the leaves begin changing.
Planning ahead gives you more options for dates, locations, and session times. It also means you can make wardrobe decisions without trying to coordinate everything the week before your session. And then, when October arrives, you get to simply enjoy the season.
What to Wear for New England Fall Family Photos
The best outfits for fall foliage family photos don’t have to be complicated. I generally recommend choosing a group of colors that work together rather than trying to match everyone exactly. Soft neutrals, denim, warm browns, muted greens, burgundy, rust, cream, navy, and other autumn-friendly colors can all photograph beautifully against the foliage.
Texture can also add a lot to a fall wardrobe. Sweaters, knit layers, corduroy, boots, jackets, and soft dresses can all bring a little seasonal interest without making the photographs feel overly themed.

The New England Fall Essentials
There are a few things that make October family sessions in Massachusetts especially enjoyable.
Layers. October weather can change quickly, so having a sweater or jacket nearby is always a good idea.
Comfortable shoes. Even if you have a beautiful pair of boots planned for portraits, make sure the kids can comfortably walk around the location.
A little flexibility. The best foliage isn’t always on the exact date you originally imagined. Sometimes the trees change early. Sometimes they hold onto their color longer. Outdoor sessions always involve a little cooperation from Mother Nature.
And perhaps most importantly, don’t wait for the perfect fall day to enjoy the season. Some of the most beautiful photographs happen when the air is crisp, the kids are moving around, and everyone has stopped worrying about whether every leaf is exactly at peak color.
Fall Family Photos Are About More Than the Leaves
The foliage is beautiful, but it isn’t really what I want families to remember most. Years from now, I want you to look at these photographs and remember your children at this age.
The way siblings stood next to each other.
How tall they were that October.
The expressions they made when they weren’t paying attention to the camera.
The way everyone fit together in that particular season of your life.
The fall colors will eventually fade. The leaves will fall, the trees will become bare, and another season will begin. That’s exactly why I love photographing families in autumn. For a few short weeks, the landscape gives us this beautiful backdrop. We just have to take the time to stop and document your family while it is here.
