I first met this Winchester, MA family when they welcomed their younger children were tiny newborns. Years later we met up again for outdoor family photos at the beach. It’s always so fun getting to check back in with families when they have grown so much. This late September session at Salisbury Beach Reservation marked our second consecutive year creating beach family portraits together, and it was an evening filled with beautiful light, relaxed moments, and plenty of laughter. New England beaches have a way of creating timeless portraits, especially as summer turns into fall and the crowds begin to disappear. This family’s soft color palette of peachy pinks, creamy whites, and light blues blended beautifully with the pastel sunset sky, creating a look that feels effortlessly coastal without ever competing with the scenery.

A Salisbury Beach Session for a Family of Six

Photographing a family of six means making sure every relationship is celebrated. Of course we created classic family portraits, but we also spent time focusing on the connections that make this family unique. We captured the four siblings together, individual portraits of each child, and special moments with Mom and Dad separately.

Those parent and child portraits often become some of the most treasured photographs from a session. As children grow, having a portrait that captures just the two of you becomes something families appreciate more every year. With children ranging from six to fifteen years old, it was especially meaningful to document each stage of childhood all in one evening.

Why Late September is Beautiful at Salisbury Beach Reservation

One of my favorite things about photographing at Salisbury Beach Reservation is how different it feels once late September arrives. The light becomes softer, the sunsets often take on incredible shades of blush and peach, and the beach is noticeably quieter than it is during the height of summer. Families can simply enjoy being together without feeling rushed or surrounded by large crowds.

For this session, the sky reflected nearly every color in their wardrobe, creating a cohesive look that feels both elegant and completely natural. There’s nothing quite like those pink cotton candy skies at the beach. When it comes to styling beach photos, this is definitely something to keep in mind.

Individual Portraits Matter Too

Family photographs are always the centerpiece of a session, but I also believe every child deserves a moment in front of the camera on their own. For this family, we created individual portraits of all four children along with close up headshots that highlight each of their personalities. Their parents also requested portraits with each child individually, creating keepsakes that will only become more meaningful as the years pass.

I can easily imagine the photos in the below collages as pieces in a stunning gallery wall showcasing each child individually. Wall art is such a beautiful way to display special moments like these sessions.

Is It Too Late to Start a New Family Tradition?

I’ve heard parents ask this question before, and my answer is always a resounding “absolutely not”. Just because your children aren’t babies anymore doesn’t mean you’ve missed your chance to start an annual family photo tradition. Maybe you’ve never had professional family portraits taken before, or perhaps you’ve simply never made them a yearly tradition. There is no “right” age to begin. Six, twelve, fifteen, or anywhere in between, every stage of childhood deserves to be documented.

For this family, that meant capturing portraits to show who each child is now, and to highlight the beautiful relationships. These are the photographs that will help preserve not just what their family looked like at this stage, but who they were together. And once you start, there’s something pretty special about looking back at those photographs from year to year and seeing just how much your family changes.
