There is something about October in New England that makes family photos feel especially right. The changing leaves, crisp air, and warm autumn colors create a beautiful backdrop, but what I love most about fall sessions is how naturally families settle into them. Kids can run, parents can relax, and we can capture a mix of beautiful portraits and the little moments in between.
Last October, I photographed several families during my fall mini sessions at two different locations north of Boston: Medford, MA and Ipswich River Park in North Reading, MA. These sessions are a great example of why I love photographing families outdoors in the fall. Every family was a little different, and every session had its own personality, but the goal was the same: beautiful family portraits that still feel like your family.
If you’re looking ahead to fall family photos in the Boston or North Shore area, here are a few of my favorite images from October 2025, along with answers to some of the questions I hear most often from parents.

Fall Family Photos in Medford, MA
The first location for my 2025 fall mini sessions was in Medford. This location has a lovely mix of trees, open space, and seasonal color, giving us plenty of variety even during a shorter mini session.
One of the things I love about outdoor family photos is that we don’t need to spend the entire session standing still and smiling at the camera. We’ll get a few classic family portraits, but there is also plenty of room for movement, cuddles, walking, playing, and those in-between moments that often end up being some of my favorites.
For families with younger children especially, keeping things moving can make all the difference.

Fall Family Photos at Ipswich River Park in North Reading
I also photographed fall mini sessions at Ipswich River Park in North Reading, a favorite North Shore location for outdoor family portraits. The park gives us a beautiful natural setting for fall photos without needing anything complicated. The changing leaves and surrounding greenery do most of the work, while the open areas give kids room to move and families room to interact naturally.
North Reading is also convenient for families throughout the North Shore and communities north of Boston, making Ipswich River Park a great option for families who want the look of classic New England fall family photos without traveling too far.

When Should You Book Fall Family Photos?
Summer is the time to start thinking about fall family photos.
Fall is one of my busiest seasons for outdoor family photography, and the most popular October dates can fill well before the leaves begin to change. If you know you want family portraits for holiday cards, gifts for grandparents, or simply to document your family this year, I recommend reaching out during the summer rather than waiting until October.
I offer a limited number of fall mini sessions each year at select outdoor locations, as well as full family sessions for families who would like more time and flexibility. Planning ahead also gives you plenty of time to choose outfits without the pressure of trying to find everything the week before your session.

Do You Offer Fall Mini Sessions?
Yes! Fall mini sessions are offered on select dates and at select locations throughout the season. Mini sessions are a great fit for families who want updated portraits without committing to a longer full session. They are also especially popular with families who have little ones who may not want to spend a long time taking pictures or families with busy older children.
That said, a full outdoor family session can be a better choice if you have a larger family, want more variety, would like individual photos of your children, or simply prefer a slower pace. The best option really depends on what you want from your family portraits.

What Time of Day Is Best for Fall Family Photos?
For outdoor fall family photos, I typically photograph families in the morning or during the hour before sunset. The hour before sunset gives us that beautiful warm evening light that works so well with fall foliage. But I completely understand that this timing does not work for every family, especially when you have young children who are already tired by late afternoon.
That’s why I also offer morning sessions. If your child is happiest after breakfast and definitely not at their best at 4:00 in the evening, let’s not pretend otherwise. A happy, energetic child in beautiful morning light is much more important than forcing a late-day session just because it is traditionally considered the ideal time for outdoor portraits.

What Should We Wear for Fall Family Photos?
I always recommend choosing outfits that coordinate rather than trying to make everyone match. Fall is a great season for warm neutrals, earthy tones, soft textures, and classic colors that complement the landscape without competing with it. Layers can also be helpful because October weather in Massachusetts can change quickly.
Most importantly, choose clothing that your children can comfortably move in. If they are uncomfortable, cold, itchy, or constantly adjusting their clothes, they are probably not going to have much fun.
I have a more detailed guide with ideas for what to wear for fall family photos, including color combinations and styling tips, if you want more help putting everyone’s outfits together.

What If My Kids Are Wild?
This is probably one of the most common concerns parents have before family photos. And honestly? That’s okay.
Your kids do not need to arrive perfectly behaved, sit still, or smile on command. I have been photographing babies, toddlers, and children since 2009, and I fully expect there to be some running, silliness, distractions, and big personalities during a family session. In fact, some of those moments can make the best photographs.
I will give your children opportunities to move, play, interact with you, and warm up to the camera. We will still get the classic family portrait, but we don’t need to spend the entire session trying to force everyone to sit perfectly still.
My job is to work with your family as it is, not expect you to create a perfectly behaved version of it for the camera. And I have plenty of tricks up my sleeve beyond just capturing those real life candid moments. Sometimes a gentle reset by way of a hug from mom and dad is all that’s needed. Or a fun prop like the age balloons down below can be a good way to distract some kiddos (although at 8 and 10 these boys were well behaved without them!)

What Happens If It Rains?
Outdoor family photography and New England weather don’t always cooperate. If the weather forecast calls for rain that would make the session uncomfortable or prevent us from getting the type of images we’re planning for, we will reschedule.
I keep backup dates in mind during the fall season whenever possible because October weather can be unpredictable. The goal is not simply to get the session done. It’s to give your family a beautiful experience and photographs you’ll actually love. And thankfully, a cloudy fall day can still make for gorgeous portraits. We don’t need perfect sunshine to create beautiful outdoor family photos.

Why I Love Fall Family Photos on the North Shore
There are so many beautiful places around Boston and the North Shore for outdoor family photography, and I love that we don’t have to travel far to find a gorgeous fall backdrop. From Medford to North Reading and the communities throughout the North Shore, there are parks and outdoor spaces that give us exactly what I want for family portraits: beautiful natural surroundings, room for children to move, and enough variety to create a gallery that feels complete.
But the location is only part of it. The best fall family photos are not necessarily the ones where everyone is looking at the camera. They are the ones that show how your family actually interacts. A little hand reaching for Mom’s. A child being carried by Dad. Siblings laughing together. Everyone walking down a path. A toddler who finally decides the photographer might actually be fun.
Those are the moments that make the portraits feel like yours.

Planning Your Fall Family Photos
If you’re hoping to take fall family photos on Boston’s North Shore, I recommend starting the planning process during the summer. This gives you the best chance of getting your preferred date, enough time to plan outfits, and plenty of time to enjoy the season instead of trying to fit everything in at the last minute.
Whether you choose a fall mini session or a full outdoor family session, my goal is always the same: to create beautiful portraits while giving your family space to simply be yourselves.
