There is something especially meaningful about a first baby’s first year. Every baby milestone feels brand new, and for this North Andover MA family, documenting their son’s 3 month stage with a photo session was high on the priority list. Baby C came into my Andover MA studio for his very first professional milestone session along with his mom, dad, and their adorable 12 pound mini goldendoodle, Maple. Including Maple in this North Andover 3 month baby photos session was one of the most important details for this family, and honestly, she could not have been sweeter with him.

One of my favorite parts of being an Andover area baby photographer is watching families grow over the years. Since this session, this family has welcomed a second baby boy and recently returned to the studio again for his own 3 month photos. Seeing families come back as their children grow is always incredibly special.

A Classic and Timeless Styling Approach for Milestone Baby Photos

For this session, everything about the styling felt clean, simple, and timeless. Mom and dad chose coordinated navy, white, and denim tones that photographed beautifully against the darker studio backdrop and neutral textures. Baby C’s first outfit had such a classic, preppy feel. His plaid collared shirt layered under a navy sweater with a tiny teddy bear detail paired perfectly with his brown pants. It had a very timeless Ralph Lauren-inspired look that never goes out of style for baby milestone photos.

For his second outfit, he switched into dusty blue-gray quilted overalls paired with a playful long sleeve shirt featuring tiny dogs. The softer tones worked beautifully with the white and navy furs used throughout the session. This is a great way to create some variety during your session while still keeping the look cohesive and classic.

Including the Family Dog in Baby Photos

I have parents ask me whether they should bring their dog to a baby session fairly regularly. And the answer is almost always yes if your dog is calm and comfortable around new spaces. Maple was such a big part of this family’s life during their son’s first year, so it made perfect sense to include her in these portraits. Some of the sweetest images from the session were the quiet moments between Baby C and Maple while he relaxed on soft neutral blankets.

These are the kinds of photographs that become even more meaningful over time because they capture not only what your baby looked like, but what life genuinely felt like during this season. I’ve had many a family dog in my studio, and even a couple of cats. I know how important pets are to a family, and I’m always happy to have them be part of the session as well.

Why 3 Month Baby Photos Matter

The three month stage changes so quickly. Babies are beginning to smile responsively, make eye contact, lift their heads during tummy time, and show so much more personality than they did during the newborn stage.

Baby C gave us some wonderful smiles throughout the session, especially during his solo portraits on the warm brown fur setup and during tummy time. At this age, babies are expressive without yet being overly mobile, which makes it a wonderful time for relaxed milestone portraits.

Family Photos That Feel Natural

One thing I always encourage during milestone sessions is making time for parent and family portraits in addition to solo baby images. The family photos from this session felt incredibly natural and connected. The coordinated navy and white styling kept the focus on expression and connection rather than distractions, and the darker wood backdrop gave the portraits a timeless look that works beautifully as wall art.

The black and white family portrait from this session is still one of my favorites. It has such a quiet, emotional feel to it that I know will only become more meaningful as the boys grow older.
