Some themes never go out of style, and this “Very Hungry Caterpillar” cake smash was one of those sessions that instantly felt timeless, colorful, and full of personality. I first met baby Mr. T’s family during his newborn session, and it has been so special watching him grow through each milestone. They later came back for Christmas and Santa photos around 9 months old, and eventually for his 2 year birthday mini session too. Being able to photograph families throughout these seasons is one of my favorite parts of being a baby photographer near North Andover, MA.
For his 1 year photo session, his parents chose a “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” cake smash inspired by the beloved Eric Carle book, and it could not have fit his happy personality better.

Family Photos Before the Cake Smash
We started the session with simple family portraits before bringing out the cake smash setup. Mr. T wore jeans, a white tee, and bright red suspenders that tied everything together perfectly. He was all smiles for photos with mom and dad, and the darker wood backdrop gave these portraits a classic feel before we moved into the colorful set design for the second half of the session.
I always recommend beginning cake smash sessions with family photos first. Babies this age usually have the happiest energy right at the start of the session, and it creates a beautiful mix of portraits parents can hang in their homes alongside the more playful birthday images. Plus it gives everyone a chance to get comfortable together and in the studio in a way that feels safe and secure.

A Colorful Very Hungry Caterpillar Cake Smash
The cake smash setup was filled with thoughtful details inspired by the original storybook illustrations. A giant paper caterpillar stretched across the backdrop along with hand cut versions of the foods from the book. The custom birthday cake included Mr. T’s name, bright colors, and tiny details pulled directly from the story itself.
For the smash portion of the session, he changed into colorful suspenders, a matching bow tie, and a bright patterned diaper cover that worked perfectly with the playful set. This is exactly why I love themed cake smash sessions. When parents fully commit to a concept, the final gallery feels cohesive, personal, and memorable without looking overly trendy.
“The Very Hungry Caterpillar” as a theme is especially perfect for parents searching for a colorful cake smash idea that still photographs in a timeless way years later.

Why Storybook Themes Work So Well for Cake Smash Sessions
One of the things I loved most about this North Andover cake smash session was how recognizable the theme was without overwhelming the baby himself. The bright colors photographed beautifully, but the focus still stayed on Mr. T’s expressions and personality the entire time. He loved exploring the cake, playing with the paper props, and showing off those big smiles between bites of frosting.
Storybook inspired themes also tend to age especially well because they feel nostalgic instead of tied to a short lived trend. Sessions like this are fun for babies now, but they also become meaningful keepsakes for parents later.
Planning a 1 Year Photo Session in Andover MA
Cake smash sessions can be as simple or detailed as you want them to be. Some families prefer soft neutrals and minimal styling, while others love colorful themes with custom props and decorations like this one. Both approaches photograph beautifully when the setup reflects your family’s style.
If you are planning a 1 year photo session or looking for a North Andover baby photographer, themed sessions like this can be a great source of inspiration while still feeling polished and personal.
I also photographed another “Very Hungry Caterpillar” cake smash session with a completely different setup and styling approach, which is always fun to compare because no two sessions ever end up looking exactly alike. You can see that session here.
If you are planning a first birthday baby milestone session and want something playful, polished, and personal to your family, themed cake smash sessions can be such a fun way to celebrate this stage. My Andover MA studio photographs families from throughout North Andover, the North Shore, and greater Boston for baby milestone and first birthday portraits year round.
