Styling Guide for Holiday Photos :: What to Wear
It’s the most wonderful time of the year! At least it is in my photography studio. As of tomorrow it is officially Christmas at Crabapple Photography. Tomorrow is my long day of mini sessions and I cannot wait. I am so excited for the two brand new set designs I have ready to go. I really think my clients are going to love them. For the next few weeks I will have children and families of all ages coming into my studio for holiday photos, and the biggest question I am always asked is what to wear. The biggest struggle is typically clothing for the kiddos. So every year I try to help out with a styling guide. But the biggest thing I want to say is that there are no wrong choices when it comes to styling holiday photos. Comfort is definitely something to keep in mind. If your little one is uncomfortable it will show in the pictures!
Keep scrolling for some inspiration pictures and some links to some of my favorite finds this year. I think this year there will be lots of throwback looks, textures, and some surprising colors for holiday photos. I can’t wait to see what you all decide to go with!

Girls
For little girls there are so many different options. Whether you’re looking to keep it cozy with knit sweaters, comfy with graphic tees, or a bit more formal with a holiday dress. I’ve been seeing a lot more neutrals in the last few years compared to in the past. But this year I see the trends shifting back towards colorful. There’s no wrong choice!
Boys
Boys looks for holiday photos tend to stick to the classics. Plaid and flannel shirts, chunky knit sweaters, graphic tees and sweaters. The occasional blazer or suiting look. I only have daughters so have never had to dress little boys, but I love looking at the boy options for these styling guides every year. I am thrilled by the number of graphic sweaters that are available this year!
Matching
I love when siblings come into the studio with fully matching looks. And so many places make it super easy to create matching ensembles these days. These looks are from Hanna Andersson and Children’s Place respectively. But Old Navy is another great option to finding coordinating outfits for all sizes.
Pajamas
I absolutely cannot forget to mention my favorite category when it comes to what to wear for holiday photos. And that obviously means pajamas! Hanna Andersson is always the most well known option for matching jammies for the whole family. But more and more companies are hopping on the bandwagon and I absolutely adore it. Even if you’re just shopping for clothing for your kiddos, there are so many adorable options for PJs!
