Outdoor Fall Family Photos :: Boston Family Portrait Photographer

I know what you’re thinking. It’s still Summer! And while that is true, it also means it’s time to start looking ahead and talking about one of my all time favorite topics. Boston area fall family photos! Every year the summer flies by, and while I’m right there with you wishing it would never end, I would be lying if I said I don’t love fall. The foliage, the crisp air, the apple and pumpkin spice everything. Plus, it’s the absolute perfect time for outdoor family photos! The beach and summertime have their positives for sure. But nothing, and I mean NOTHING beats fall in New England.

This post is full of some mini sessions from back in 2020. Many of these families are ones I have photographed numerous times. This is one thing I love about fall family photos: getting to watch my families and their kiddos grow!

Styling Ideas for Fall Photos

There is one aspect to fall family photos that I get questions about all the time. And that is “what should we wear?” I can understand the worry. It’s hard enough for me to pick out an outfit for myself, let alone an outfit for my whole family! But the good news is I have been offering fall family photo sessions for many years, so I have learned a thing or two about styling them! My first piece of advice: comfort is key! Layers are super important for these photos. For one thing, fall in New England can mean warm and sunny, or it can mean chilly and windy. Which means layers are the best option. And of course, fall is basically synonymous with chunky knits, soft plaids and flannels, and boots.

For styling ideas keep scrolling. This post has great options for color schemes, too. With outdoor fall photos you should keep in mind that there will be plenty of browns and greens in the backdrop. In this post there are great examples using navy blues, neutral whites and grays, and perfectly fall options like creams and deep reds. No matter what your style is, this post should give you some ideas!
