Massachusetts Fall Foliage Family Portraits
Fall in New England is a beautiful time full of gorgeous colors. Shades of green, yellow, orange, and red all mesh together to make for a backdrop that people drive from all over to come see. And since we are lucky enough to live right in the middle of it all, it only makes sense that fall would be a popular time of year for outdoor photos. In fact, fall is the most popular time of year for Massachusetts family portraits. Not only is it a beautiful time of year, as you can see in the examples below, but it’s also the perfect timing.
Getting photos taken in the fall leaves you enough time to order holiday cards, while also making sure the photos are recent. Especially with little ones, they’re constantly changing and growing. It might sound crazy but the difference between photos taken at the start of summer and in the fall can be noticeable.
Plus, these outdoor fall sessions are fun! We’re outside, in the fresh autumn air. What could be better? Keep reading for styling ideas and inspiration.
Is a Mini Session Right for Your Family?
Mini sessions are much shorter than a full session, which is perfect for little kids who don’t want to sit still for very long. My assistant and I have perfected the art of making kids smile and laugh (even if it means acting absolutely ridiculous). These sessions are meant to be fun, easy, and stress-free for mom and dad! Sometimes, however, the full session is the best choice for your family. If you have a large family, or if you want numerous poses and styles, the mini session probably won’t be your best option. Since they’re only 15-20 minutes, there isn’t much time for outfit changes.
This blog post about mini sessions will give you even more information, so make sure you check it out. And once you’ve decided if a mini session is right for you, click here to book your fall or holiday mini session! These are almost gone so don’t miss out!

Styling your Family for Fall Portraits
If you were to close your eyes and think of fall, what would you think of? I think of changing leaves, pumpkin spice everything, and warm cozy clothes. These all make for the perfect styling inspiration. Above are two different styling choices, both work fantastically for fall. I love the way the emerald green pops in the first family. The older brother has what we call the “hero outfit”. His shirt brings in the green from mom’s sweater and the blue from mom’s shirt. It also adds some visual interest. I also love the way little brother’s knit sweater adds just the right amount of coziness. Nothing says fall like a knit sweater and plaid flannel!
Down below, mom’s jacket is a a great pumpkin spice brown. Baby sister adds a pop of color with her yellow pants, while the boys stay neutral.
Whether you prefer to stick with all grays like the family right above, or if you like to add different colors like the family at the end of this post, there are plenty of options when it comes to styling your fall family portraits.
