Fall in New England brings to mind many things. Changing leaves, pumpkin patches, cooler weather, knit sweaters, and family portraits. It’s true, fall is hands down the most popular time of year for family portraits. And it makes sense. Not only is it a gorgeous time of year that makes it perfect for outdoor family portraits, but fall is also the perfect time for holiday card photos. Whether you want portraits of your entire family to put on a card, or some updated photos of your kids together, fall is the perfect time of year for outdoor family photos near Merrimack Valley, MA.
Mini sessions are 15-20 minutes, which is just the right amount of time. My assistant and I have been doing this long enough that we are able to accomplish a lot in that time. Plus, it’s perfect for restless kids who don’t want to sit still for long! They’re able to run around a bit and burn off some energy, and you get some beautiful family portraits with the fall foliage as your backdrop. It’s a win-win!
Styling Ideas and Inspiration for Outdoor Fall Family Photos
When it comes to styling family portraits, there are many different options. The family below is a great example of how stunning shades of cream, tan, and browns can look. Since fall is full of colors, the light and neutral shades really pop against the nature backdrop behind them.
Shades of navy and maroon, which you can see an example of if you keep scrolling, are also perfect for fall. The navy stands out from the other colors, while the maroon matches the darkest of the fall foliage.
Getting the most out of your Fall Family Photos
Fall is our busiest time of year. Not only is it a beautiful time of year, but it’s also the best time to get family or child photos for holiday cards. It leaves enough time to print and send the cards. But it also makes sure that the photo is recent. This is especially important when babies are involved since they grow so fast!

Using a Hero Outfit for your Fall Family Photos
Hero Outfits are what we call an outfit that stands out from the rest. It might include all of the colors the rest of the family is wearing, or be a different texture. Either way, it adds extra visual interest to a photo or works to tie all the outfits together. And what could be more of a hero than sparkles?!
Displaying Your Family Portraits At Home
Don’t let your family portraits develop virtual dust on your hard drive, print your photos! I love walking into someone’s house and seeing family portraits on their walls. You can feel the love and joy as soon as you see them. Personally, my home is filled with photos of my daughters, our family, and even my family growing up. Regardless of what your style is, there is a print or product for everyone. Below are two different wall galleries. One is framed, one is gallery wrapped canvas, and both are beautiful. We can create a mock-up like this for you, too. Using a picture you take of your walls, and your photos, we can show you what your wall art will look like. If this is something you’d like, please email me today to get the process started.
