How to Get The Most Out Of Your Fall Family Photo Session

And Why You Should Get Fall Family Photos North of Boston

1. Book Your Fall Family Photo Session Early & Avoid the Rush

I know what you’re thinking. “Kate, it’s SUMMER!” And YES, you’re right, it is. The last thing we should be thinking about right now is changing weather and falling leaves. It’s supposed to be all beach and heat and sunshine. But, the fall is the busiest time of year north of Boston for family photos. And those spots fill up super fast every year. Avoid the rush and start thinking about it now. You’ll have a much better chance of grabbing the day or time that you want, and you won’t have to worry about missing out. Don’t let the sun distract you!

2. Style The Session For Fall

When it comes to styling, family portraits take a little more consideration than any other session. There are more people involved, which means coordinating outfits. You can check out this blog post which is all about styling fall family portraits. But remember these key things: keep it timeless, wear layers, and make sure the clothes are comfortable! Comfort is important, especially for little ones. Everyone is happier when they’re comfortable. Want more inspiration? Check out our Fall Family Photo Pinterest board here.

3. Cherished Keepsakes

This is less about specifically fall family portraits, but more of a reason why you should totally get family portraits. Especially as families grow older, it gets harder and harder to get everyone in one place, particularly in matching clothes! Which is why it’s important to make the time to get them done. These photos will last until your little ones are grown up and have little ones of their own. Portraits are the ultimate keepsakes that can last for generations. But only if you get them taken!

4. Fall Is Gorgeous

We New Englanders are seriously spoiled when it comes to gorgeous fall weather. People drive from all over to take a peek at our fall foliage, and it’s quite literally right in our back yard. The colors are hands down the best colors, they make for a perfect backdrop and when it comes to styling choices, the options are basically endless. And fall colors look good on everyone! But not only is it a gorgeous time visually, it’s also gorgeous weather! Cooler than the heat and humidity of summer, not yet the bitter cold of winter. Perfect for spending time outside with family.

5. Perfect For Holiday Cards

One of the reasons why fall has become such a popular time for family portraits is simply because of the time of year. It’s close enough to the holidays that growing babies and kiddos aren’t going to grow too much between fall and the holidays. But there’s still plenty of time to get your fall family portraits on your holiday cards. This can either be an added benefit to getting portraits taken, or it can be the perfect excuse for why you have to do it.

6. Hire The Right Photographer

How do you get the most out of your fall family photo session? Hire the right photographer. A good family photographer won’t just point the camera and say smile. Because at the end of the day, that just doesn’t work for everyone. Little kids need to feel comfortable and they need to have fun in order to capture genuine smiles. And not only will the little ones have fun, but you will too. We’ll have fun, we’ll sing, we’ll act like clowns. Even make farting noises (always good for a laugh), whatever it takes. We are laughing the entire time. I always have an assistant with me to help make things fun and get everyone involved and in the best mood for portraits. Family portraits don’t have to be stuffy and formal. They’re about capturing your family, in all their fun, happy (maybe even goofy) glory.

7. Stress Less And Have Fun

Getting genuine smiles out of the whole family is my job. You don’t have to worry about it. My assistant and I will act as silly as we need to (we don’t let pride get in our way!) until every member of the family is smiling. This should be a fun bonding experience for the whole family, not something to stress about. Just enjoy the day!
