Timeless Maternity Photos in the Greater Boston Area

Including your older child in your maternity portraits is such a sweet way to celebrate your growing family. Whether they’re a curious toddler or already proudly embracing their role as big sibling, these moments help create meaningful, heartfelt portraits you’ll all cherish for years to come.

As a maternity photographer in Boston, I often work with families who want to include siblings in a meaningful way during their pregnancy photo shoot, and I always encourage them to do so. But these photos aren’t for every family, and that’s okay! If you’d prefer to keep your session just about mom, or just with mom and dad, that’s perfectly fine. No matter what it is you’re looking for, I’m here to help you get the maternity photos you’ve dreamt of.

Below are some of my favorite pose ideas to include older siblings. These work well in studio or for outdoor sessions across the Boston suburbs and Greater Boston area. We have so many stunning locations around us, I love getting the chance to take advantage of them!

Mom Holding Toddler with Legs Around Her Belly

One of the most natural and connected poses is having mom pick up her toddler, who instinctively wraps their legs around her growing belly. My favorite thing is to get these maternity photos as close ups with just belly and those little legs.

This pose not only shows the physical closeness between mother and child, but it also highlights the baby bump in a sweet and intimate way. It’s perfect for toddlers who want to be close to mom and helps ease them into the session by doing something familiar: being held. I love capturing this moment during maternity portraits with siblings because it symbolizes the transition from one baby to two, all in one beautiful frame.

Kissing or Hugging the Baby Bump

This pose is definitely heart melting! Older siblings, especially toddlers, are often curious about mom’s belly. A gentle kiss on the bump or a cozy hug shows that early bond forming between siblings before they even meet. I get emotional thinking about it!

These images are perfect for parents who want their Boston maternity photos to feel tender and intimate. I guide children into this pose during the session, making it fun and playful while still capturing the soft, emotional connection that naturally unfolds. My goal is to make every member of the family comfortable and feel stress free. So if they’re not up for the hugs and kisses, we’ll work around it. And sometimes those little ones surprise us and give a spur of the moment candid kiss, too.

Looking at the Camera Together

While candid moments are beautiful, sometimes it’s nice to have one classic, posed portrait where everyone is looking at the camera. This setup is a favorite for clients wanting one perfect image to frame or include in birth announcements. But don’t worry, we can still make these moments feel natural.

During your professional pregnancy photography session, we’ll take the time to create a relaxed, cheerful portrait of you and your older child or children smiling together. These images are timeless and help ground your gallery with a beautifully composed family photo during this special season.

Hands on the Belly

For a more artistic and detailed shot, I love including a shot of your child’s hands resting on or around your baby bump. Sometimes these photos are a close up where you can’t see mom’s face. And sometimes I just can’t help but show off that look of pure love Mom gives! Either way, as a professional pregnancy photographer of over 16 years, I love these photos showcasing the first interactions between siblings.

At the end of the day, maternity sessions with siblings are all about the bond, the anticipation, and their blossoming connection. It’s become one of the most requested shots during maternity portraits with siblings, especially for clients looking for something subtle but deeply meaningful.

Capturing the Love Between Siblings Before Baby Arrives with Maternity Portraits

Your pregnancy photo shoot in Boston is more than just a session. It’s also the beginning of your child’s journey into siblinghood.
