Beach Family Photos :: North of Boston

What does the beach mean to you? If you’re anything like me, it may mean awkward sunburn lines and seagulls stealing your food. BUT, it also means memories. The sound of the waves. The salty air. There’s a reason the saying goes “Life is Better at the Beach.” Because it really is! This is why summer sunset beach sessions are so amazing. Kids can run around and, well, be kids. Parents can stroll hand in hand watching them play, all while a gorgeous sunset is painting the sky behind them. And maybe, the beach should mean family photos!

What To Wear For Your Sunset Beach Session

With the laid back feel of a beach family photo, your only question will probably be: But what in the world do I wear to the shoot? Usually when you’re at the beach you’re in a bathing suit, and while I am sure you look great in it, we aren’t going for the Baywatch look. But you also don’t want to dress up too much and be uncomfortable or look out of place. Have no fear, we are here. We want you to love these photos and styling is just as important as those freckled faced smiles.

The great thing about beach sessions is you have so many options color-wise. It won’t be hard to pick a color scheme that Mom, Dad and the kids are happy with. You can never go wrong with pastels. If the sunset can get away with mixing pinks, yellows, peaches, and blues, so can you. Picture it, Mom in a cotton peach sundress, Dad in a blue button up with the sleeves rolled, and the kids building sand castles in coordinating pinks and blues. Of course, you can never go wrong with white either. White has a clean and timeless look, and while many fads go out of style, this one never will. Some of my favorite go-to sites for summer styling are H&M and Boden! They have something for the whole family!

How To Display Your Beach Family Portraits

You may be thinking, while a beach session sounds great, what would I do with these photos? I know most of us don’t have a summer house down in the keys (um, if you do, can I come?) but there are still so many options for these portraits. With such a variety of breathtaking, yet subtle colors, you really can’t go wrong anywhere you put them.

Best Beach Locations North of Boston

We are lucky to live in an area that has so many beaches within driving distance. I know I have a tendency to take that for granted! When it comes to beach photos, I’ve been asked for recommendations in the past. Here are some of my favorites.

Crane Beach, Ipswich, MA

Crane Beach is one of the most well known beaches in the area and has become known for its gorgeous views, clean water, and soft sand. There are also trails, and tours of the Castle Hill estate.

Nahant Beach, Nahant, MA

The reservation at Nahant Beach is open year round, but summer is definitely the time to come. It’s fully accessible which

Plum Island, Newburyport, MA

Plum Island is a barrier island that offers plenty of family fun. A light house and playground on the northern end, the public beach in the center, and on the southern end is the state reservation (which is right across from Crane Beach!)

M Street Beach, Boston

Located in South Boston, M Street Beach has become a popular destination over the years. Check out this family photo session from a few years ago and you’ll understand why it’s become a hot spot.

Wingaersheek Beach, Gloucester, MA

When you think of seaside towns in Massachusetts, chances are Gloucester will be one of your first thoughts. And of all the beaches in Gloucester, Wingaersheek is one of the most popular and well known due to how family friendly it is. This two year old and family session from Wingaersheek is one of my favorites.

Salisbury Beach, Salisbury, MA

A go-to option for many families north of Boston, Salisbury has both public beaches close to food and arcades, and the more picturesque state beach options.

There are so many beaches North of Boston to choose from. I even have a bucket list of beaches I want to get to for beach family photos:

So, who is ready for some beach fun?!
