One of the greatest compliments a family can give a photographer is inviting them back year after year. I’ve been photographing this wonderful Acton, MA family since their oldest daughter, Miss M, was just a baby. Over the years we’ve celebrated newborn days, baby milestones, growing personalities, and now a tradition of annual family portraits together. Watching families grow is one of the most rewarding parts of what I do, and seeing these three siblings together every fall has become something I genuinely look forward to.
This year’s session brought us back to a beautiful location for outdoor family photos, the beautiful Acton Arboretum in Acton, MA. While many people picture peak foliage when they think of fall family photos, there is something incredibly special about these early fall evenings. September still gives us warm sunshine, lush green landscapes, and comfortable temperatures while bringing that unmistakable excitement that autumn is just around the corner.
Why Is Early Fall is a Perfect Time for Outdoor Family Photos?
Outdoor fall family sessions are some of the most popular portrait sessions I photograph each year, and it’s easy to see why. The light is softer than the middle of summer, children are happy to run and play without the intense heat, and families can enjoy beautiful outdoor portraits without needing winter jackets or heavy layers.
This September day was warm enough for sundresses, shorts, and short sleeves, giving the entire session a relaxed, timeless feel. The greenery throughout the Acton Arboretum created a beautiful backdrop while the golden sunshine added warmth to every image. For families looking for outdoor family photos near Boston, these early fall weeks offer a wonderful balance between summer’s vibrant colors and autumn’s cozy atmosphere.
What Are The Benefits of a Full Family Session Outdoors?
While I offer fall mini sessions each year, this family chose a full outdoor family session, which allowed us to slow down and create a gallery filled with meaningful variety. One of my favorite parts of a full session is having time to photograph every important relationship within the family instead of focusing only on the traditional group portrait.
During this session we created:
- Individual portraits of each child
- Sweet parent and child cuddles with Mom
- Special moments between Dad and each child
- Every sibling combination
- The three siblings together
- Mom with all three children
- Dad with all three children
- Relaxed family portraits
- Classic walking portraits
- Fun jumping photos
- Quiet family cuddles on a blanket
When families receive their gallery, they’re able to remember not just what everyone looked like that year, but how each relationship felt.

Years Together Makes Every Session Feel Effortless
One of the biggest advantages of photographing a family year after year is the comfort that’s built over time. The kids know exactly what to expect when they arrive. There’s no awkward warm up period or wondering if they’ll smile for the camera. Instead, they get to be themselves almost immediately.
That familiarity allows us to spend less time settling in and more time laughing, playing, exploring, and creating genuine moments together. It’s one of the reasons I love photographing returning families. Every year tells another chapter of their story.

Sibling Photos That Will Only Become More Meaningful
Some of my favorite images from this session are the sibling portraits. The hugs and the laughter. The super sweet playful kisses on big sister’s cheeks. Not to mention all of the moments where everyone naturally leaned into one another without being asked. As children grow older, these relationships change so quickly. Taking time every year to photograph siblings together creates a collection of memories that becomes even more meaningful with time.
I especially loved creating side by side collages from this session, showcasing each child’s individual personality as well as every sibling pairing. It’s a wonderful reminder that while each child is growing into their own unique person, they’re also growing up together.

How Do You Make Family Portraits Feel Natural?
One of the questions I hear most often is whether families need to know how to pose. And the answer is absolutely not. Some of my favorite images from this session weren’t carefully posed at all. Whether it was the family walking hand in hand down the path or everyone jumping together. Or maybe the moment was mom and Dad laughing with the kids or a cozy family cuddle on a blanket at the end of the session.
Those moments happen naturally when everyone has room to move, interact, and simply enjoy being together. That’s one of the biggest reasons I love photographing family portraits like this Acton MA session. Beautiful outdoor spaces like the Acton Arboretum give children the freedom to explore while creating photographs that feel genuine and relaxed.
