The first year tends to get a lot of attention when it comes to milestone photography, and for good reason. Babies change so quickly during those first twelve months. But honestly, some of the biggest personality shifts happen after that first birthday. Which is why continuing to document your child’s life with toddler photography sessions is so important. And so much fun, too.
The toddler years are such a fascinating stage. They are no longer babies, but they are not quite big kids either. Between the endless curiosity, growing independence, imaginative play, and rapidly changing little personalities, ages two and three are some of my favorite years to photograph.
Many families who book my baby’s first year package continue coming back for what I call Birthday Club sessions, short annual milestone sessions designed specifically for documenting these toddler years as children continue growing long after that first birthday cake smash. Over the years, I have photographed so many fun toddler milestone sessions in my Andover studio and outdoors throughout the Boston area.
Why Toddler Milestone Photos Matter
There is something uniquely special about photographing toddlers. At this age, children are developing strong opinions, learning independence, discovering imagination, and interacting with the world in entirely new ways. Parents often joke about the “terrible twos” or the “threenager” phase, but these years are really filled with so much personality.
The way they talk, play, explore, and connect changes constantly. Capturing these stages through professional toddler photography gives families a chance to preserve a season of childhood that often moves even faster than infancy.
Creative Studio Toddler Photography Sessions
One of the things I love most about toddler photography sessions is how different every child is. Some families want a timeless, classic portrait session while others love leaning into their child’s interests and imagination.
A Fairytale Inspired Cinderella Session
This little girl arrived ready for her own princess story with a beautiful Cinderella inspired dress and a castle backdrop that transformed the entire session into something straight out of a storybook.
The best part of toddler sessions like this is allowing children to fully lean into the things they love at this age.

Timeless Two Year Old Portraits
Not every milestone session needs elaborate props, as this classic session proves. This sweet two year old boy kept things simple with a soft gray backdrop, a wooden chair, and a few favorite toy cars. The result was a collection of portraits focused entirely on personality and expression.
Simple setups often create the most timeless images.

Princess Dresses, Outfit Changes, and Turning Three
This studio toddler session perfectly captured the excitement of turning three.
Between a giant wooden number 3, a beautiful princess dress, multiple outfit changes, and a fairy wand, every image reflected that wonderful stage where imagination takes over everything.

Playing Dress Up in Mom’s Wedding Dress
Sometimes the simplest ideas become the most meaningful.
This little girl spent her milestone session trying on her mother’s wedding dress and veil, creating portraits that felt playful while also becoming sentimental keepsakes for the family.
Sessions like this often become favorites because they preserve connection alongside personality.

Sweet Outdoor Mother and Son Portraits
This outdoor milestone session focused on simple connection.
Rather than props or elaborate styling, the session centered around genuine interaction between a three year old boy and his mom, capturing the natural affection and trust that defines this age.

Storytelling Through Favorite Interests
Toddlers develop such strong interests around age three, which makes incorporating favorite activities incredibly fun.
Mr. J brought along a wagon filled with books and spent part of his session cuddling with his grandmother, creating portraits that documented both his personality and important family relationships.

Sunflowers and a Little Bit of Magic
This birthday milestone session combined simple portraiture with playful creativity.
Miss C stood alongside a giant wooden number 3 and bright sunflowers for some adorable pictures. And then in front of the wooden wall I added a whimsical glittery number effect during editing that gave the final images a little extra magic while still keeping the focus on her personality.

Toys, Lollipops, and Big Birthday Energy
Toddler sessions do not need to feel formal.
This little boy celebrated turning three with some favorite toys, a giant wooden number 3, and an oversized lollipop that perfectly matched the fun and energetic chaos that often defines toddlerhood.
The best toddler portraits usually happen when kids are simply allowed to be themselves.

Birthday Club Sessions for Growing Families
One thing many families do not realize is that milestone photography does not need to stop after the first birthday. Families who purchase my Baby’s First Year Package receive access to Birthday Club sessions, giving them the opportunity to continue documenting birthdays well into the toddler years.
Because the truth is, children do not suddenly stop changing after age one. In many ways, ages two and three bring even bigger personality shifts than the baby stage.
Watching families return year after year and documenting those changes has become one of the most rewarding parts of what I do.
