One of the best parts of photographing families year after year as a milestone baby photographer is getting to watch little personalities unfold. This sweet Burlington family first came to me when their daughter was a newborn. Since then, I’ve photographed beach family portraits, Santa sessions, milestone photos, and eventually this unforgettable Burlington MA first birthday cake smash. Looking back at these images now, it’s easy to see hints of the confident, happy little girl she would become.
Her first birthday session in my Andover studio was full of variety, beginning with family portraits and milestone photos before ending with one of the most enthusiastic cake smashes I’ve ever photographed.

Family Portraits Before the Cake Smash
I always encourage families to include parent and family photos during a first birthday photography session. A baby’s first year passes incredibly quickly, and while the cake smash is often the main attraction, the family portraits frequently become some of the most treasured images from the session.
We started with family portraits, followed by mother-and-daughter and father-and-daughter photographs. These images capture an important milestone not only for the baby, but for the parents who have spent an entire year watching their child grow from a newborn into a curious toddler.

Simple Milestone Portraits to Celebrate Turning One
Before bringing out the cake, we photographed a variety of classic first birthday portraits. She looked adorable in a soft white dress against a clean white backdrop, creating timeless images that keep the focus entirely on her expressions. We also incorporated a light pink dress with a tulle skirt for a slightly dressier look.
One of my favorite parts of the session was the bubble setup. Bubbles are often a great way to capture genuine reactions, and she was completely captivated. The resulting images are full of the joyful expressions parents love to remember from this stage.
For families searching for first birthday photos in Burlington MA or the surrounding Boston suburbs, incorporating multiple outfits and setups creates a gallery that feels complete and tells the story of this milestone from several different angles.

A Cake Smash That Started Immediately
Many parents ask whether their baby will actually eat the cake. The honest answer is that you never know. Some babies carefully inspect it. Some poke it with one finger. Others want absolutely nothing to do with it and we end up having to do a bait and switch with puffs or cheerios. This birthday girl had a different plan. Practically from the moment the cake was placed in front of her, she went straight in face first. No hesitation. No uncertainty. Just pure excitement.
The expressions throughout the cake smash were hilarious. Between the colorful balloons, sprinkles, frosting-covered hands, and giant bites of cake, she gave us one memorable image after another. This cake smash was equal parts cute and funny, making it an absolute must share.

Colorful Cake Smash Setup for a First Birthday Session
For her cake smash setup, we created a bright and cheerful birthday scene filled with colorful balloons in shades of pink, purple, teal, orange, and yellow, along with confetti filled balloons for extra sparkle. Her pink sprinkle covered birthday cake coordinated perfectly with her purple tutu, colorful sequins, and “Bday Girl” shirt.
The vibrant colors reflected her playful personality and created a fun contrast against the clean studio portraits we captured earlier in the session. The best part was watching her fully embrace the experience. From diving into the cake to knocking it over and happily eating frosting by the handful, she made the most of every second.

Why First Birthday Photography Matters
A first birthday photography session captures one of the biggest milestones of childhood. During a single session, parents can preserve family portraits, milestone portraits, and all the personality that emerges during a cake smash. The result is a gallery that documents not just what a child looked like at one year old, but who they were at that moment.
For this Burlington family, these photographs became another chapter in a story we’ve continued documenting through annual Valentine’s Day, Easter, beach, and Santa sessions, along with her two-year milestone portraits. Watching families grow over the years is one of the greatest privileges of my job as a milestone baby photographer, and this Burlington MA cake smash photos session remains one of my favorite first birthday celebrations to revisit.
