Tips and Inspiration For Christmas Mini Sessions For Families :: How to Prepare for Christmas Photos
How to prepare, what to wear, and how to keep kids happy for your holiday photos so everyone can experience the magic of the holidays.
Holiday photo season can feel busy, chaotic, and over scheduled. But your Christmas mini session doesn’t have to be. With a tiny bit of planning (and some helpful insider tips!), your session can be calm, joyful, and full of genuine smiles. Below is a look at what I send to my clients ahead of time to help them feel prepared and relaxed. Think of this as your go to guide for creating a stress free Christmas mini session experience. These tips include what to wear for holiday mini sessions, how to prepare for family Christmas photos and Christmas photo session ideas for kids. All of the information and inspiration I have accumulated over 16+ years doing this!

Timing: Arrive Ready for Holiday Magic
Christmas mini sessions move quickly. Sessions are scheduled back to back to keep the schedule running smoothly for every family.
Plan to arrive a few minutes early so we can start promptly and make the most of your time. If you arrive and the family ahead of you is still finishing, just hang tight until they leave. There will be a sign on the door if I’m mid session so you know exactly when to head in.
A calm, on time arrival sets the tone for the whole experience. And it helps you make the very most of your mini!

Styling & What to Wear: Think Cozy, Classic Christmas
Each year I switch things up, but I always have two different set designs. In this blog post, I show last year’s setups, which included two themed sets:
- a cozy, elegant living room Christmas scene
- a whimsical, snowy “outdoor” winter wonderland complete with gingerbread house
To keep your photos cohesive and festive, choose outfits that bring various Christmas vibes to life. A few quick ideas:
- Christmas pajamas (always adorable!)
- Simple, holiday inspired outfits like knits, deep greens, classic reds, creams, or plaid
- Accessories for the winter set. Think hats, gloves, scarves, and cozy textures
Because mini sessions move fast, everyone must arrive fully dressed and ready to go. There isn’t time for outfit changes at the studio, so pick your look ahead of time and arrive feeling confident.

What to Bring & How to Prep Your Kids
Christmas minis are energetic, joyful, and often silly, especially with little ones. To help things run smoothly and make sure your Christmas mini sessions are stress free:
Bring small “smile helpers.”
Things like a favorite tiny toy, a lovey, a rattle, or anything that helps grab their attention can make a big difference.
Keep the energy light.
Kids feel what you feel! When parents stay calm and relaxed, the photos always turn out better. Don’t worry about perfection. Your job is simply to enjoy the moment and I’ll take care of the rest.
Prep your toddler or older child ahead of time.
A quick little “photo session warm up” can really help. Let them know that:
- Kate will be the photographer
- There will be a big light
- I’ll be behind the camera ready for lots of smiles and fun
Setting expectations helps kids walk in confident and excited rather than surprised or nervous.
