Make Santa Photos Mini Sessions Magical With These Simple Tips From An Andover MA Photographer
Santa mini sessions at our Andover MA photography studio are one of my absolute favorite parts of the holiday season! There’s just something about the sparkle in a child’s eyes when they realize Santa is really here. These short and sweet holiday mini sessions in the Boston area are designed to capture all that wonder, joy, and excitement without the stress. To help things run smoothly (and to make sure your little ones have the best time ever), here are a few tips for how to prepare your kids for stress free Christmas photos with Santa mini sessions and make the experience truly magical.
Timing is Everything
Our Santa Experience sessions are back to back, so being just a few minutes early is key! When you arrive, take a peek at the door, if there’s a “session in progress” sign hanging up, just hang tight until the family ahead of you is done.
We’ll jump right into the fun once it’s your turn. These are fast paced sessions, but I promise we pack a lot of magic into those few minutes! A little prep and punctuality mean we can spend every moment capturing smiles, giggles, and those sweet Santa reactions.

What to Wear for Santa Photos
Think Magical Christmas!
I always have two different set designs for my Santa Claus mini sessions. These change every year, but typically they are cozy, festive, and full of fun touches. I usually go with one lighter and one darker set. Either way, the sets will be full of festive Christmas cheer. You can go classic with Christmas pajamas or a simple holiday inspired outfit. Trust me when I say that both look amazing!
Hats, scarves, or little mittens make adorable finishing touches, especially since I usually have some faux snowballs on hand for a fun little interactive activity.
And here’s a pro tip: sometimes little ones aren’t too sure about sitting right next to Santa (he is a pretty big deal!). If you think that might be your child, come dressed and photo ready yourself. You might end up jumping in to help them feel comfy. Some of my favorite images ever include parents laughing alongside their kids!

What to Bring (and How to Prep Your Child)
A familiar toy, blanket, or lovey can go a long way in helping your child feel at ease. Santa sometimes even borrows one to make a little connection, it’s the sweetest thing.
If your child is a toddler or older, it helps to chat about what’s going to happen. Let them know they’ll be coming to the studio to see a big camera, meet a photographer (that’s me!) and my helper, and, of course, see Santa! You don’t have to give away all the surprises, but a little preparation helps them feel more excited than nervous.
And honestly, the best thing you can bring? A calm, happy attitude. Kids feel your energy, so when you relax and enjoy the experience, they do too. We’ll take care of the rest!

The Magic of Meeting Santa
Here’s a little behind the scenes secret: Santa doesn’t always come out right away. We’ll almost always start with some solo portraits first, this helps them settle into the studio and get comfortable in front of the camera.
Once they’re relaxed, I’ll whisper the “magic word” and suddenly… Santa appears!
It’s one of my favorite parts of the session, that moment when curiosity turns into surprise and delight. A quick tip for parents: when Santa walks in, resist the urge to look at him right away. If your child sees you glance over, they’ll spot him too soon! Keeping the magic alive just a few seconds longer makes for the best reactions.

Remember: It’s All About the Magic
These sessions aren’t about perfect smiles or posed moments. They’re about fun and connection and that one-of-a-kind Christmas magic. Whether your child giggles, stares wide eyed, or even hides behind you for a minute, it’s all part of the story, and that’s what makes the photos so special.
So take a breath, let the moment unfold, and enjoy watching your child experience the wonder of Santa in real life. That joy? It’s exactly what these sessions are all about.
