Family Beach Portraits at Golden Hour for a Melrose MA Family of Four
There’s something truly magical about Plum Island at golden hour that makes it perfect for family photos. It’s the soft glow of the setting sun, the gentle ocean breeze, and the wide stretches of sandy beach that make it the perfect backdrop for timeless family portraits. This family beach session from 2023 brought together a family of four from Melrose, MA for a relaxed and joy filled evening by the water. As a North Shore beach photographer, I love capturing both the playful and heartfelt moments that unfold naturally, and Plum Island delivered the perfect mix of beauty and fun for their gallery.

Golden Hour Magic on Plum Island
Golden hour, the short window just before sunset, bathes the world in warm and flattering light that makes every photo feel dreamy and timeless. On the beach this soft, golden glow enhances skin tones, reduces harsh shadows, and creates a natural sparkle on the water and sand. The lower sun also allows for more creative angles, gentle backlighting, and even those gorgeous sun flare effects that bring extra magic to a gallery. For families, golden hour offers not just beautiful light, but a more relaxed atmosphere as well. From cooler temperatures to fewer crowds, and a peaceful setting that encourages natural smiles and candid moments.

Sweet Sister Moments on the Beach
For this session, big sister Miss L was about 3 years old and baby sister Miss M was 3.5 months old. Both of these ages are sweet, adorable, and fun in their own ways. I made sure to get photos of the two sisters together, snuggling on a beach blanket. At any family portrait session I always make sure to get solo portraits of each child as well. Some of my favorite photos this session are the ones of Miss L getting some one-on-one time with each parent. The snuggles she had with each parent, plus the photos of her walking hand in hand with dad, are all so perfect. I know she had a great time during these photos!
There are so many reasons to love being a family photographer, and getting to photograph families like this one from Melrose MA is just one of them. I love the fact that I get to help families capture memories that will last a lifetime, be they golden hour beach portraits, milestone photos, or anything in between.
Why Plum Island is Perfect for Family Beach Photos
If you’ve ever been to Plum Island then you know exactly why it’s such a great location for beach family photos. But just in case you haven’t, let me introduce you. It’s a barrier island that is perfect for a family beach day. It spans between Newburyport, Newbury, Rowley, and Ipswich which also means it’s the perfect excuse to have a day to explore Cape Ann and all it has to offer. And trust me, that area has a lot to offer! The island itself is named for the beach plum shrubs that grow in the dunes. It’s a really great option for beach sessions because it has a little bit of everything. Sandy beach, stunning water views, and picturesque dunes with driftwood fences and greenery.

If you’re dreaming of your own golden hour family portraits on Plum Island or anywhere along the North Shore, now is the perfect time to start planning. These fleeting moments with your little ones are worth preserving in a way that feels both beautiful and authentic. Let’s create a session that captures the laughter, connection, and love unique to your family.
