Including Babies and Toddlers in Family Beach Photos with a North Shore MA Family Photographer

I met up with this family of four at Salisbury Beach for their family portraits back in 2023. It was my second time photographing them, but the first time I got to meet their new arrival Miss S. I had previously photographed them when big brother was about the same age Miss S was in this session. You can see that session here: 3 Month Baby Pictures Boxford. It was so much fun getting to see how much Mr. B had grown, and getting the chance to meet Miss S. Just one reason why I love being a family photographer near Boxford, MA!

Boxford Family Beach Session Beneath Cotton Candy Skies

As the sun began to dip and painted the sky with soft pinks and blues, this Boxford family beach session unfolded into pure magic. The pastel cotton candy skies created the perfect backdrop for capturing some of the best poses for toddler beach photos, the kind that feel as natural and joyful as the moment itself.

One of my favorite sequences was when mom and dad held hands with their toddler son, Mr. H, and dad held Miss S as they walked along the water’s edge. The gentle movement, the little footprints in the sand, and the breeze playing with their clothes it’s a classic pose that never fails to showcase a family’s bond.

We added in some playful energy by having mom and dad swing Mr. H between them, his laughter mixing with the ocean sounds. These interactive, motion filled moments are truly some of the best poses for toddler beach photos, as they allow kids to be themselves while we capture genuine joy. And of course, baby sister Miss S had her moment in the spotlight, too. Mom lifted her high into the air, cooing at her as the sky turned pink behind her. Simple, sweet, and absolutely heart-melting.

We also let Mr. H. explore and have fun collecting shells, running toward the water, and getting a ride on dad’s shoulders. Giving toddlers space to roam often results in the most authentic images. Meanwhile, Miss S had a cozy spot on a soft blanket, where we captured her adorable expressions and tiny details.

Every family is different, but these timeless, interactive poses create a session flow that feels natural and fun, making the experience as memorable as the photos themselves.

What to Wear for Family Beach Photos: Comfort, Layers, and Effortless Style

One of the best parts of this session was how perfectly this family styled their outfits for a breezy beach evening. When it comes to toddler and baby beach photos, comfort and layering are essential. Salisbury Beach can have a chill in the air, even in summer, and dressing with that in mind makes all the difference in how relaxed everyone feels during your family photo session.

For this session, mom chose a timeless palette of whites, soft beiges, and coastal blues. A classic, effortless combination that photographs beautifully against the sand and sea. And when the temperature dipped, she was prepared! A fuzzy bear sweatshirt for Miss S. kept her cozy and added an adorable touch of texture. Mom’s own jean jacket served as a perfect layering piece, stylish yet practical for staying warm while snuggling her babies.
