What to Wear :: Valentine’s Day Photos

Styling and What to Wear Guide for Children and Baby Valentine’s Day Photos :: Andover MA Photographer

valentine's day photos

The first time I offered Valetine’s Day photos in my studio, they were a hit in a way I don’t think I was expecting. And I’ve had parents ask me year after year to please have them again. I change up the set design each year, but the general theme is always a fun and festive Valentine’s Day set. Over the years I’ve developed some themes-within-a-theme. Including the oh so popular Kissing Booth. And some Cupid/Angel wing photos. But a common question I get asked every year: what to wear for Valentine’s Day photos? So here is a styling guide! There are links to some options I have found that I love. But a lot of these ideas are also just general inspiration. I’ve included some super cute photos from years past for even more inspiration. Remember: comfort is key! Your little one will look significantly happier if they’re comfortable. And most importantly have fun!

Hearts

When it comes to Valentine’s Day, you really can’t go wrong with hearts! Whether you stick with classic pink and red. Or add in some rainbow colored hearts. Either way, the classic symbol of all things love, and Valentine’s Day, is a great starting point when deciding what to wear for Valentine’s Day portraits.

Pink and Red (and White)

I don’t know about you, but when I think Valentine’s Day, I think pink and red. So why not stick with that color palette when it comes to your kiddos clothing? And even if you’re a boy mom, that doesn’t mean you can’t get into the pink and red fun. I found some really sweet pink options for boys to wear for Valentine’s Day photos.

White is always a great option if you’re struggling to find pink and red (or if you just prefer a neutral aesthetic). It can also be great if you’re looking for a more whimsical or ethereal look.

Classic Looks

Partially inspired by the kissing booth prop I’ve included in the last few years. Partially inspired by some of my past clients. But either way, when it comes to these Valentine’s Day photos you really can’t go wrong with denim overalls, suspenders, and other classic clothing options. Part of me can’t help but think of Alfalfa and Darla from Little Rascals–perfect for Valentine’s Day!

I love this classic cricket sweater. It’s a great option for little boys–because they can definitely wear this sweater again!
Nothing says classic like denim overalls.

Comfort is key, so if your kiddo will be more comfortable and happy in a pair of jeans and a tee shirt, then let them wear it! There are some really cute graphic tees available for Valentine’s Day. If it will make your little one happy to wear a Valentine’s Day shirt with Spider-Man on it then absolutely go for it!

Formal Ideas

Looking for an excuse to break out some more formal options for your kiddo? This is your chance! Frilly, lace, ruffles, are all perfect for little girls for Valentine’s Day. And for little boys? Suits, vests, bowties, yes please. These sessions are so much fun–and the clothing should be, too! If you’re looking to make your Valentine’s Day portraits extra special, consider having your little one wear a more formal option.

Props and Accessories

When I started offering these Valentine’s Day sessions, both as mini sessions and also giving clients the option of a full session, there were a few ideas that I had. One of them was a Cupid idea. This included angel wings and a bow and arrow. This is something that has lasted throughout the years and I love it. I have angel wings in the studio for kiddos (and babies) to wear during the session! For other props and accessories there are the aforementioned bow ties and suspenders. Headbands, crowns, flowers, and magic wands are all things that would make sense for Valentine’s Day. I have a dream of someone bringing a giant box of chocolates but we’ll see if anyone else ever sees my vision!

The red boots are a perfect accessory!
