A Styling Guide for Tree Farm Family Pictures :: What to Wear

Tree Farm family photos are something I have offered the past few years. And they are tons of fun! They are quite similar to my fall outdoor mini sessions. But the addition of the Christmas trees adds a festive touch, making them perfect for Christmas and holiday photos. Choosing what to wear for your Tree Farm family pictures might seem like a daunting task. But I am here to give you some ideas and inspiration from some of my past sessions!

Something to keep in mind when it comes to getting dressed the day of the session is the weather! This is New England after all. It’s likely to be brisk and chilly. But in November the sun can also shine brightly and it can get warm. Which is why my first piece of advice is always layers. Whether that means a knit cardigan, a fuzzy pullover, or the addition of scarves and vests. Another thing that is always a good idea to keep in mind is comfort. When it comes to sweaters and scarves, sometimes they can get itchy. It’s always important for your little one to be comfortable in their clothing. Sure, they may look cute in their new Christmas sweater, but if it’s itchy it’ll show on their face!

I love both looks–chunky knit sweater over a plaid button down AND the red and white stripes!

For color schemes and prints I have some ideas that are classic and timeless. Buffalo plaid is one of my absolute favorites. The red is the perfect pop of color, and it always looks so cozy. I also really love any type of plaid for Christmas photos. Red, blue, green, and browns are iconic color choices when it comes to plaid.

Both kiddos look sweet, timeless, and comfortable!

I also really love the more neutral styling choices. Earth tones line brown, forest green, and cream look great against the Christmas tree backdrop. And when in doubt–add a Christmas tree to the sweater like the photo right below!
