What to Wear for Christmas Family and Child Photos :: Ideas and Inspiration from an Andover MA Photographer
Oh, Christmas photos! Christmas photos are always so much fun. I offer both mini sessions and full sessions so that there is truly something that works for everyone. When it comes to these Christmas family photos the most common question I am asked is about what to wear. And there are definitely some different routes parents can take when it comes to styling Christmas family photos. You can go a formal direction, or keep it casual. And even in amongst those two categories there are tons of options.
Some parents choose to go super matchy with their outfit choices. But it’s definitely possible to have some variety and instead go with complementary. In this post there are examples for both. We have super matchy (matching pajamas, all buffalo plaid). And there are also examples of how to dress in shades and prints that go well together without matching. The most important thing is that everyone is comfy and happy.
And when in doubt: bring some Santa hats so everyone can have matching accessories! This also works with any knit hats or winter outerwear. Pom pom knit hats are iconic and look adorable on the whole family.
Colors and Prints for Christmas Photos
One thing to think about right off the bat regardless of style direction is color schemes. Red is a super popular option to wear for Christmas photos. Whether you’re going a true Santa Claus red, or darker maroon/burgundy, red is a great choice. Green, especially dark green, is another perfect choice (think pine trees!). For those who are looking to keep it a little more winter-themed and not overtly Christmas, navy blue is always a winner. And of course there are shades of white and cream, and silver or gold. You can definitely keep your Christmas family photos more on the neutral side and let my Christmas set take center stage.
Another thing to think about: prints! There are some truly festive prints that are perfect for the holidays. Buffalo plaid has become really popular over the past few years. And of course there is the traditional tartan plaid and argyle that are also winners. Another go-to in my opinion is fair isle. Nothing says cozy winter like a fair isle sweater!
Formal Styling Choices for Christmas Photos
If there is one time of year that going formal works, it’s Christmas photos. That’s not to say that everyone HAS to choose a more formal styling option for their portraits. But if you’re looking to go in a dressy direction for Christmas photos there are tons of options. Matching dresses, button down shirts, or sweaters are a good place to start when it comes to a more formal Christmas portrait. Adding in a little festive glam with some gold accents is always a great idea, too. Remember these photos don’t need to be black tie level formal–comfort is still important!
Some of my favorite places to get more formal looking children’s clothing include Janie and Jack, Hope & Henry, J Crew, and Boden. Whether your style is classic Christmas, a little on the preppy side, or more modern, one of these stores will have something for you! And some of them even have clothing for all ages (parents, too!).
Casual Styling Ideas for Christmas Photos
Looking for something more casual for your Christmas photos? I have two words for you: Matching Pajamas. I absolutely love when a family comes to me in Christmas pajamas. Whether it’s just the kids, or especially when the parents get in on it. Not only do these pajamas scream “holidays” but it’s also just such a sweet sight to see. These are great for families who are looking for something cozy. Or for families who want something a little on the funny side. Looking for perfect pajamas? Hanna Andersson is always a popular choice.
Of course there are other casual styling options that aren’t pajamas. And they are still great choices, too. Some parents opt for jeans and seasonally appropriate tops. Sweaters and knits are perfect options for casual Christmas photos. Buffalo plaid is another choice that is perfect for Christmas and can be dressed up or down. Old Navy is always a great choice for casual Christmas clothing. Cat and Jack from Target and H&M are other options. Whether you’re looking for casual sweaters, or even more casual pajamas, as long as your kids are comfy they will be happy!
The Children’s Place has a ton of options for matching pajamas for the whole family!
