Spotlight on Local Businesses :: Primrose School of Andover

There are a lot of aspects of my job I love and am grateful for. One of the things I cherish most about being a professional photographer is getting to meet so many wonderful people. Turns out, many of my clients own and run businesses that are a large part of the community. Since I’m frequently blown away by how cool my clients are, I have decided to start singing their praises on my blog by putting a spotlight on some local business and the people who run them. First up is the Primrose School of Andover.

I’ve had the pleasure of photographing the owners, Urvi and Beau Athia and their beautiful daughter. I have also taken professional headshots for them and was inspired to learn more about the school and their mission. And it’s a cool one.

As someone who has been working around children for 10+ years, I’ve always been in awe of teachers. This has only grown since I had two lady babies of my own. Primrose School of Andover is a franchise of the larger Primrose School system, so if it sounds familiar this might be why. They have schools in 31 states, including 5 in Massachusetts.

The Beginning

Urvi has a background in education, and the idea of opening her own school was always in the back of her mind. Her husband, Beau, has more of an entrepreneurial background, focusing on real estate development. Combining their two backgrounds, they decided to make opening a school together their goal.

There are so many different forms of schooling; home daycare, independent private preschool and franchises. Beginning in 2010, Urvi and Beau looked at all of these different avenues. It was around this time that Urvi found the Primrose School system. While her daughter hadn’t been born yet, Urvi fell in love with their philosophy and knew that it was something she would want to teach her own children one day.

The Primrose School Philosophy

The Primrose School’s main philosophy is that of Balanced Learning. Balanced Learning is about using every facet of childhood to teach. As she said, no two children learn the same. Even more than that, at Primrose School of Andover the goal is to teach children what it means to be kind, empathetic, and a good person. Just listening to Urvi talk, there is no denying her passion and deep caring about the school and it’s philosophy.

When I asked Urvi what the most rewarding part of her job was, I loved her answer. She said, “The ‘lightbulb moment’ when a child understands something.” Watching these children absorb their surroundings, taking it all in, and learning something new every moment. Those are the moments when she knows she chose the right career path.

Becoming Part of the Community

Entering a community can pose challenges for any new entity. But when dealing with the most important thing in a parent’s life, their child, it can become even more tricky. For Beau and Urvi, the goal was to build relationships and trust with families in their community. They did this while spreading the word about all their new school had to offer. Urvi simultaneously worked hard behind the scenes to ensure everything lived up to how she had envisioned it to be.

Since opening in January 2017, Urvi and Beau might have faced long working days and late hours, and they might have felt the pressure to become a trusted member of the community. But their hard work has paid off. Urvi told me she feels she has great partnerships with the Primrose School families, and that they’ve found a wonderful community in the Andover area. Her hope is that they have been able to show the families and the community that they care for and love the children in their care, teaching them, and watching them grown.

And if you ask me, I’d say they definitely have succeeded in that!
