There’s something about photographing toddlers at this age that feels both unpredictable and completely honest. Mr. R came into the studio in November for his 2 year old photoshoot, and having photographed him the year before, I already knew we’d get a mix of movement, personality, and those fleeting, quiet moments in between. This toddler portraits photoshoot near Reading MA struck a thoughtful balance between everyday childhood moments and a subtle seasonal touch, thanks to my holiday set designs in my Andover studio.
This session was designed to do two things well. Capture classic, everyday portraits of a growing toddler, and create a small set of holiday images for the season without letting them take over the entire gallery.

Classic Toddler Portraits That Feel Like Him
We started his Andover studio toddler portraits with a clean, light gray backdrop and kept everything intentionally simple. A long sleeve tee, jeans, sneakers, and occasionally his backwards hat. No distractions, just space for him to be himself.
At this age, structure rarely works the way you think it will. Instead, we leaned into what he naturally gravitated toward. His parents had mentioned ahead of time that he loved cars and trucks, so we incorporated a few into the session. It gave him something familiar to engage with, and it brought out expressions that felt genuine rather than posed.
Some of my favorite images from this part of the session are the ones where he’s sitting on the small wooden chair or on the floor, completely in his own world. These are the kinds of toddler portraits that age well. Simple, expressive, and rooted in who they are at that exact stage. We also paused for a few family portraits on the same backdrop. Clean, connected, and timeless. The kind of images that don’t feel tied to a specific season or trend.
If you’re planning something similar, you can also look back at his milestone session here: 1 year photos. It’s always meaningful to see how much changes in just a year.

A Subtle Shift Into Holiday Portraits
After the classic portion of the session, we transitioned into the holiday set designs. This part of the studio is redesigned each year, and for this season it leaned into a warm, nostalgic workshop feel. Think wooden toys, soft lighting, and oversized seasonal details that feel festive without overwhelming the subject.
The entire family changed into Christmas pajamas, which created a clear visual shift without needing a completely separate session. We kept this portion efficient and relaxed, knowing toddlers have a limited window before they’re ready to move on. Mr. R explored the set the same way he did the first. Curious, hands on, and fully engaged. The wooden sleigh and toy elements gave us just enough structure to create variety while still letting him lead.
The result is a small collection of holiday images that feel consistent with the rest of the gallery. The Christmas portion of the toddler photoshoot complements the session rather than defines it.

Why a Blended Session Works So Well
For families in the Boston and North Shore area, combining a 2 year old photoshoot with holiday mini session photos inside a full session is often the most practical approach.
You get a complete gallery that covers both everyday portraits and seasonal images, without having to book multiple sessions or rush through a short mini. More importantly, it keeps the focus on your child. Not the set, not the props, not the theme.

Looking Ahead
Since this session, I’ve had the chance to photograph Mr. R again for his 3 year photos. Watching families come back year after year is one of the most meaningful parts of this work. These sessions become less about a single milestone and more about documenting a childhood as it unfolds.
