Wakefield Autumn Adventures :: Candid Children and Family Portraits in the Fall Foliage
This Wakefield family session with the S Family was such a joy to capture! Their request was simple: “Different poses, silly, fun or candid” was their exact request, and that’s exactly what we focused on. At the time of their session, big brother B was 5 and little sister C was 2, which made for the sweetest dynamic. These ages are full of energy and personality, making for the most genuine candid fall family portraits. As a photographer specializing in Wakefield family photos, I love seeing how siblings interact, laugh, and explore together during their sessions. Fall portraits are perfect for children and families!

Fun Ideas for Outdoor Fall Family Photos
When it comes to planning fun ideas for family photos, fall is the perfect season. The colorful leaves, crisp air, and golden light set the stage for playful portraits. For children especially, I always encourage running, leaf-throwing, and simple games to bring out their natural joy. Whether it’s a silly sibling moment or the whole family tossing leaves together, these interactions are what create truly memorable fall children portraits.
Not only do these activities make the photos look beautiful, but they also ensure genuine smiles and laughter. When families relax and have fun, the results are authentic portraits that capture the love and connection between them.
All Things Fall in New England for Children Portraits
New England in autumn is unmatched. The vibrant colors, cozy weather, and nostalgic feel all make it the ideal season for fall foliage family portraits. I adore when families dress to complement the scenery, whether in soft neutrals, bold jewel tones, or earthy shades. For this Wakefield session, mom’s floral dress stood out beautifully against the golden backdrop, while little sister’s all white outfit looked almost magical among the leaves.
The best part about fall styling? Almost anything works when paired with the natural tones of New England foliage. From casual flannels to flowing dresses, your wardrobe will shine against this seasonal landscape.
Capturing Candid Moments in Fall Family Portraits
One of the highlights of this session was how the candid moments became lasting keepsakes. The laughter, the playful energy, the quiet in-between moments, all of these tell a family’s story just as much as the classic posed portraits.
I always aim to balance candid and posed shots so families walk away with a gallery that feels full and timeless. Whether it’s a posed sibling portrait or spontaneous giggles in the leaves, these photos represent who you are together right now. And that’s what makes candid fall family portraits so special.
