A Neighborhood Newborn Session Close to Home
This adorable little guy from Andover came to my Andover newborn photography studio for his newborn photos, and he brought along his very important companion, his furry best friend Teddy. I love sharing this session for so many reasons. It’s important to me personally. But it also can show so much about newborn photos for premature babies, and how these newborn portraits are truly baby led. One of the most common questions I get as a newborn photographer Andover MA families trust is: what if my baby is born early?
This session felt especially meaningful for a few different reasons. For one, this wonderful family lives just a few doors down from me, which made welcoming them into the studio even more special. My own daughters danced at mom’s studio, Center for the Performing Arts, when they were little. And it’s truly such a warm, supportive environment. If you have a child looking for a non competitive dance studio with incredible teachers, it’s absolutely worth exploring.
Dad is equally passionate about dance and his family runs North Andover School of Dance, which offers a wide range of classes for dancers of all ages and levels.
So when I heard they were expecting, I was genuinely excited at the thought of having a newborn in the neighborhood.

A Strong Beginning: Mr. R’s Early Arrival
This session was not only special because of the connection I share with this family, but also because of everything they went through to get here.
Mr. R’s entrance into the world wasn’t what anyone expected. After an evening of not feeling well, his mom was suddenly diagnosed with HELLP Syndrome, a serious and rare pregnancy condition. What followed was a whirlwind trip to the hospital and an early, unexpected delivery.
Mr. R was born at just 29 weeks and spent 58 days in the NICU. Thanks to the incredible care team at Tufts Medical Center, he stayed safe, supported, and continued to grow stronger every day until he was finally able to come home.

A Baby Led Newborn Photography Session
When it came time for his session, Mr. R was calm, cozy, and completely in charge, exactly how every newborn photography studio session should feel.
He slept peacefully through much of his session, allowing me to gently pose him in a variety of simple, timeless setups. This included one especially sweet moment where he was styled as a tiny baby snowman. We did try to coax him awake for a few images, and were able to capture a glimpse of his eyes open as well.
And of course, big brother Teddy kept a close watch the entire time, equal parts protective and curious, which made for some truly memorable moments.
For families looking for baby boy newborn photoshoot ideas, this session is a perfect example of how simple, thoughtful styling and a relaxed pace can create images that feel both natural and meaningful.

Newborn Photos for Premature Babies
Because Mr. R was born prematurely, his session didn’t fall within the typical 6–16 day window often associated with newborn photography.
This is something many parents worry about but it’s important to know that there is flexibility, especially when working with an experienced newborn photographer Andover MA families trust.
I have photographed many babies who arrived early, and no matter their age at the time of the session, we are always able to create beautiful, lasting images. A baby led approach allows us to adjust to each baby’s needs, ensuring a calm and comfortable experience.

What Is HELLP Syndrome?
HELLP Syndrome (which stands for Hemolysis, Elevated Liver enzymes, and Low Platelets) is a serious pregnancy condition considered a form of preeclampsia. It typically occurs later in pregnancy, though its exact cause is still unknown.
It is also quite rare, affecting approximately 1–2 out of every 1,000 pregnancies.
According to Preeclampsia Foundation, about 5–8% of pregnant women in the United States develop preeclampsia, and roughly 15% of those cases progress to HELLP syndrome, impacting around 45,000 women each year.
In this family’s case, the pregnancy had been progressing normally until the third trimester. With very few warning signs, mom suddenly became unwell one evening and went to the hospital, where the diagnosis was made quickly due to the severity of the condition.
Mr. R’s early arrival at 29 weeks led to a 58-day stay in the NICU, but today, I’m so happy to share that he is now a thriving, happy little man. I’ve had the joy of photographing him many times since, during milestone sessions and seasonal minis, and if you’ve spent any time on my Instagram, there’s a good chance you’ve seen his sweet face pop up over the years.

A Story Worth Remembering
Sessions like this are a reminder that newborn photography is about so much more than just beautiful images.
They hold stories, of resilience, of unexpected beginnings, and of the quiet strength it takes to navigate those early days.
Mr. R’s session will always stand out to me, not only because of how adorable and peaceful it was, but because of everything it represents for his family.
