Wondering if I have any tips and tricks for how to get the perfect family portrait? Well, so was the Wall Street Journal! They reached out to Crabapple Photography for a 2019 article featuring just that: how to get a good family photo.

Since I’ve been at it for over a decade now, I just so happened to have learned a few tricks over the years. So I was happy, humbled and over-the-moon to oblige.

Getting the Perfect Family Photo

How to Get Great Family Portraits
Photographing families since 2009 has taught me many things, including how to get people comfortable in front of the camera.

I love being able to capture family portraits for my clients. It’s extremely gratifying for me to know that families love their photos (click here to read a few reviews). Helping families to capture photos that bring them joy is just as awesome.

The truth is, working with kids as a child and family portrait photographer, getting everyone to smile isn’t always easy. I have a ton of tricks in my back pocket I pull out to get them to smile for me. This is including, but certainly not limited to: silly songs and dances, fart noises (works for kids and adults!), and stuffed animals. Basically we do whatever it takes!

The most important thing is that your children feel comfortable. Stranger danger is a real thing, and I’m a stranger to your kids at first. So it may seem counter-intuitive but sometimes I just ignore them! Not during the actual session, but in the beginning, to take the pressure off of them. They are free to look around, take me in and see that I am a safe, non-threatening person. I make sure I chat with mom and dad so that the kids and babies can see their parents are comfortable. Plus anyone with older children knows that sometimes, the more you ignore them, the more they try to impress you.
