Happy 2nd Birthday Trent
When I first met Trent, he was over 2 months old. He still had two months to go until his actual due date. Let that one marinate for a second.
It’s easy for me to forget how small Trent was. Under 2 lbs. He was 1lb 10 oz to be exact and 12.5 inches long. It’s almost unfathomable. It’s likely not nearly as hard for his Mom or Dad to forget those early moments of his life.
In the end they spent 126 days by his side in the NICU. They fought against extraordinarily dark odds and countless doctors who did not hold out much hope. ‘Even if he lived,’ they said, ‘he would have no quality of life to speak of’.
I had to remind myself of all of this because the two year old who came in to my studio last week was in fact this same boy. He’s huge. He’s in 3T clothing at age 2. He is quick to smile and giggle. Smile!? Giggle!? He loves to eat, has favorite toys.
During the session, he waved at me and even waved good-bye. He crawled to toys that piqued his interest. He sat in a rocking horse, holding on, occasionally rocking and generally being curious and engaged about this whole new experience.
No one knows what the future holds for anyone. But the future is very bright for this little one. That much I know.
