Five plus years ago when I first started as a newborn photographer, I would sometimes go to a client’s home for their newborn photos. Certainly before I had a studio available I went to client’s homes. As I gained more experience and become better at the specialized newborn photo niche, I realized I was getting much more consistent and overall better posed photographs in the studio. In the studio I can control temperature. It needs to be extremely warm for a naked newborn to stay asleep! Remember they were just hanging out in temperatures close to 99 degrees. I can control the lighting for more consistency in color and exposure and overall crisper photos. At low light, as is often the case in a home, the camera just can’t operate as well and the results are often grainy. Finally, photographing in the studio also allows me instant access to the seemingly billion props and blankets I own 🙂
All of this is to say that I stepped out of my comfort zone this one time because — my brother had a baby! He lives in Philly so asking he and my sister in law to make the quick 7 hour drive to Boston for some newborn photos seemed a little much. I happily drove there (did I mention I had twin toddlers and didn’t mind 2 nights to myself, even if it meant being awoken by a baby who was not mine?) to meet my nephew, snuggle and capture some photos.
